It is a 45 inch WLA that someone has changed a lot of stuff on and made a civilian chopper bike out of with a suicide clutch and an ass scratcher shift moved down from the tank ratchetgate, different rear bob fender,, sure fucked a nice classic bike.
I restored one to all origional dated parts with a complete engine rebuild and all dated body and frame parts.
But like the pics of my 35 ford rebuild, all hard copy pics and went by thewayside

I want to buy something like a BMW K1300GT or maybe a R1200RT, even a Pan-European might do. Anyone got one for sale?

Give BMW a call. From time to time they carry used bikes for sale. Though they are ex-demos.
But still they could point you in the right direction.

They are certainly big bikes. You plan on doing a lot of touring?

From further reading it looks like the R1200RT is the bike to get. It is meant to be surprisingly light and nimble for a tourer as well as being very comfy. I see military/police guys riding them everyday on my Bangkok commute, so they must be.

Unfortunately I predict it is going to be extremely expensive here in Thailand.

    some nostalgia for you

mentioned these some time back, my neighbour here in Chalong was formerly restoring bikes in UK - finally found the missing camera memory stick, and here's pics of some of his collection back home, Sunbeams S7 and S8, Bridgestone 175 and a BSA (A10?).

I think the police here have the R1150 RTP. And you're right they're great machines.
I really like my R1100GS, arguably the perfect bike for comfortable SEA touring.
If you're really serious about finding one give Khun Yut a call at Dynamic Motors. He often has bikes for sale.

If you're gonna run a BMW here you'll need to know him anyway, solid guy. He services many of the police BMW's in Bangkok.
PM me if you want his phone #.

There are quite a few R1150GS' out there, which would also make a fine SEA touring machine.
A really nice 1998 R1100GS recently sold in Pattaya for about 200K.
There was a nice Yamaha FJR listed recently, almost too much bike for Thailand though.
I'd also keep an eye out for an older TDM850. There's a few of them around.

Now this is a bike that I would like to have for use in Thailand. Not the power house of modern machines, but a truly comfortable tourer. Forty years ago, had some of these, but they were in the days when you could buy them for £30 -£40. I remember having a shed full of spare wheels, frames forks etc. - If only I had them now!

For those too young to know. The S7 (and the abomination of a machine that BSA created when they took over Sunbeam, the S8) were 500cc ohc in line twins, with shaft drive.

the ones he (neighbour) restored were mainly sold to US and Canadian collectors. The Bridgestone bikes are a bit of a mystery to me, must do some research.

haven't seen him again to ask - but what was wrong with the S8/BSA models? Apart from the wheels, what were the main changes between S7 and 8?

Next pic is of Max Corkhill who was a Canadian restorer who lived in New Zealand, restored Sunbeam S7s which he often sold to USA buyers, he became a minor TV celebrity too with tv adverts featuring him and his motorbike-riding cat Rastus. Sadly Max, his partner, and Rastus were killed in a head-on with an unlicensed, drugged idiot in a car in about 1998.

Trumpy with a sprung hub would have been a 500 twin called a Speed Twin , only came in maroon - mongrel to handle I think about 1952?

They are building new but this one looks like a copy. I don't believe any of the new Indians have a radiator.
Have you seen movie called " Worlds Fastest Indian " - true story , 1928 model still holds anumber of world speed records for Daytona . In the "olden Days in OZ they were Police bikes equipped with Murphy sidecar ( should have seen some of those old time huge coppers overflowing the chair)

That bike is not only ugly, but it is chain driven. If the wheel base is a short as it looks in the picture, the handling must be awful.

Please elaborate why a short wheelbase makes for awful handling?

Yes I remember him and the accident well. He also had some involvement with schools I think. Didn't know he was Canadian though.

Some tea I believe, the TV ads that he fronted.
