A few years later I bought the latest must have hot hatch for £750. There's only about a 100 of them left and they go for silly money..

First car at 16. Used 914 Porsche. It was a VW with a Porsche transmission. If you had it in 5th gear and going up an incline (bridge) it would slow down where you would have to downshift into 4th. It was fun.

Previously owned by a Porsche mechanic. Insurance was less than 50.00/year and payments were less than 50.00/month (I think).

    Exact same vehicle pictured below.

My next purchase. Mercedes Vision EQXX

Road trips were a big part of my life during that time period. Dont even recall being in a car that broke down or had any of my or our cars break down. Back then the American cars must have been better made.

We used to take granny with us. She saved the day many times with her purse.

We had one of these. Carrying the kid's football team to matches, camping in Cornwall, an epic trip to Rimini, Italy. It struggled a bit crossing the Simplon Pass. We took the rail tunnel coming home.

Just realized the cars I put up are when we moved to America, but we had these back in Abqaiq Saudi Arabia.

My dads company car. A 58 Volkswagon truck. 4 door it was.

The family car was a Chevy Bel Air with 3 on the column, no automatics in Arabia. Mom could only drive it in camp and not out on the roads.

In between the Holden my father owned a Hillman Imp

Post the family car when you were a kid.-hillman-imp-arp-750pix-jpg

    I drove it once.

and then later on a VH Valiant with a V8 motor. It moved.

    Similar to this.

The two childhood cars I remember were a dark blue Hillman Minx and a red Hillman Hunter.. early 70s. I remember that my dad broke his Hillman run with a Maxi... can't remember the make without looking it up. This is the first time I've thought about those cars in years.

I haven't posted yet on this thread as I'm waiting for some old pics from my mum.

The Austin 1800 broke down in Belgium, I think my dad just left it by the roadside and we took a taxi.

The worst car was this Simca Ariane, my mum pushed this more times than my dad drove it.

Post the family car when you were a kid.-simca_ariane-jpg

Needless to say it didn't last long. Then we had a Firenza with 'bucket seats' that my dad was really proud of. Pretty cramped for 3 kids in the back though...

Post the family car when you were a kid.-firenza-jpg

Best of all was after I left home and dad bought a Skoda Skip. He had it all to himself because none of the family wanted to be seen dead in it.

The first I remember Dad having was a Holden EH Station Wagon.
Same colour as this, and with the same blinds.
Post the family car when you were a kid.-holden-eh-jpg

Next was a HK Holden Premier, the same colour as this one.
The first car I went over 100 mph in, out around Hay somewhere, on one of many road trips.
(on the speedo anyway, who knows what the real speed was)

After that he bought a silver/grey Mazda RX4 Rotary. It would easily do the old ton.

the first family vehicle that I can remember as a child in England was a Triumph motorcycle with sidecar, don't know what model. Then my dad bought one of these :
Post the family car when you were a kid.-1920px-1962_reliant_regal_mk_vi_750cc_front-jpg

A Reliant Regal 3 wheeler ! Strangely though, while I clearly recall it in our driveway, I cannot remember actually riding in it although I do have vague memories of being in the sidecar.

My first car was a blue version of this :
Post the family car when you were a kid.-datsun-1600-jpg

    followed by :
Post the family car when you were a kid.-sandman-jpg

and then a Kombi campervan :
Post the family car when you were a kid.-kombi-jpeg

Loved that Kombi ....when it was running. Eventually decided reliability was important, and have had a succession of Hiluxes ever since.

Being in the army and moving about I remember loads of cars, especially as my dad used to do them up and sell them. He did go through 8 Mercs, the nicest I remember looked like the one below with the upstanding headlights... in red (circa late 60's)

Others that he had, Peugeot 604, 3 Morris Minors, a Mini Clubman that I'm sure was 500 quid brand new, a VW Passat and a couple of VW Bugs

We weren't posh like Eddy and his 2 car family

    Those were the days.

Countless are the times, when I as a todler, while dearest mummy heated up the charcoal, was sent into the hills collecting clay for daddy's repair casting of a new top piece for our dear old Morris.

I shall never forget the joy, harmony and heart warm I felt watching mother setting the camping table and listening to daddy singing his favourite Caruso arias, while working his mobile furnace.

    Fond memories

Journeys over 150 miles were a real test sometimes, the breakdown determined where you stayed for the night whilst dad tinkered in the carpark. I don't know how stressful it was for them but it was just part of motoring back then with British built cars - they could be worked on though and often fixed quite quickly.

All cars, that Jap Crap came a long way...imagine using hard shoulders as an extra lane like we do now, back then.

You could always knock on the door of nearest farmhouse and spend the night, if the old automobile broke down.
