Audi.

A friend of mine has an old Saab convertible. He is amazed that it passes MOT every year with no observations, despite the age. He never piles big miles on it as he has the use of 2 other cars as well.

For reliability, I would choose the Audi. In my selection I would have to consider insurance costs too, because any accrued bonus I might have from 2017 could be an issue, with no insurance history in UK since then.

Always loved Jaguar, but the one you are looking at is just a badge engineered Mondeo. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

If insurance is not an issue for you, I would go with the strong mechanicals and German engineering of the Audi.

PS I’m a bit shit when it comes to choosing used cars.

Are there other choices?

I'd go for the Jag for sure. I very nearly bought an XJS many years ago and still regret that I didn't.

Looper's Jag doesn't seem to do him any harm... he's got more 'companions' than you could shake a stick at.

Jags are shit but that's a Ford, so at least it'd be a bit more reliable.

I'd go with the Jag for the reason Mendip pointed out, if they're good enough for the forums Master Swordsman they'll be good enough for you too Chitty and your dating drought or thinking Moose is bangable could come to an abrupt halt

I voted for the Jag, but that was before I looked at the pics. Get the ragtop Audi! Nothing beats a convertible for summer fun driving.

before you buy any of those clunkers go to a garage and ask how much is a normal service for one of them, how much spare parts cost to gain an idea of running costs. They might only be £3,000 but the service and running costs will far exceed that.

Which engine is in the X-type? I liked the 2.7d in my XF, it was very reliable. There were problems with the particle filter, cost my friend 2500 to replace. When I had problems, I just took the car out on the autobahn for a long drive and it cleared it it up...about 350km after driving slow in heavy traffic did the trick. Also turbo is expensive if it fails but mine was okay. I sold it after 13 years for 5000 euros.
Audi is front wheel drive and quite boring to drive. The engines have also suffered reliability problems in the past so I'd be wary of high mileage.

Only driven a saab as a hire car and it was very boring. Even more so than the Audi.

It's for summer, find a RWD.

Go for the Saab - 2L is a bit underpowered for fun 2.3L is much better. Not much room in the back so treat as a 2 seater - Pain in the ass pissing about with the roof - electric to a point have to manually fix it into place at the last 4 inches

Jag/Ford is a piece of shit. Audis of that era had too many computer problems. Their rep then was shit.

My ex wife owned the Saab I took the Jewish hemorrhage and bought her that new rather than the merc convertible she wanted. Good decision.

How were they 'boring', especially in comparison with the Mondeo?

Yep, didn't realise the x- type was a fwd. I thought it was like the xf and xj but obviously not. Prefer a bmw to an audi or saab.
