Is the end of supercars at hand?

Supercar manufacturers are always trying to out do each other be it Ferrari Porsche Lamborghini Asto Martin etc. Ever increasing H.P. and torque. The internal combustion engine with the help of modern electronics has slowly increased in power and handling. Now we are entering the age of electric cars which are more than twice as efficient as I.C.E.s. Torque from electric motors is almost instantaneous rather than exixting in a narrow band as does I.C.E.s. Will people in search of a performance motor go to EVs where it is much cheaper to make a performance vehicle? Will the companies like Ferrari go electric and will people still buy them just to get a Farrari badge? Time will tell.

I saw an interesting vid the other day about Porsche developing a new synthetic fuel.

The idea isn't that it burns 100% clean (although it's cleaner) but it can be produced carbon neutrally.

Apparently there are some infrastructure issues but it all sounds and looks pretty interesting.

I for one will be sad. I love my motorbikes. I dont like a bike full of fuel injection and electronics. Maybe for a quick blurt around the streets only. For me the beauty of motorcycling is the carburetted motor with simple electrics and preferably kick start. I find a beauty in the simplicity of old motors. Like an old MG.

So it's not supercars that are at an end, but ICE supercars. There will always be an interest by some in performance vehicles, being ICE or electric.

The answer to the thread title is NO.

Just as expensive thoroughbred horses have not vanished despite no one using horses anymore for transport.

That voice in your head, the one that constantly tells you that to make up for your lack of self-esteem and worth you need to be a contrarian asshole about everything in order to gain attention--even negative--because you know you're not interesting enough to engender it otherwise?

It's wrong. Well, except for about the last part.

The experience of driving an ICE car is unique and can not be replicated by an EV. No matter how your dress it up an EV will always be an oversized golf cart. I love ICE, but its fate is sealed and there is not much any of us can do to stop what is coming.

The question is how fast is it coming?

We are already seeing the big displacement normally aspirated V-8s and V-12s starting to disappear. Mercedes stopped manufacturing its big V-8 cars about 5 years ago and went to 4.0 Liter twin turbo V-8s. The NA engines are going to die off last in the US I would think.

I have my eye on what Lamborghini is going to replace the Aventador with. Rumor has it that it will be a V12 hybrid.

For me, Having grown up messing with dirt bikes, then building and racing go karts then sportbikes to auto-crossing Datsun 510's to Drag racing big cubic inch cars where if 1 carburetor is good, 2 has to be better ideals I have enjoy the EFI transition. I had a 331 cu in turbo charged SBC that made nearly double the HP that my 648Ci mountain motor did normally aspirated and it was extremely reliable HP. Technology is always evolving and I like it. EV technology is cool stuff and will become more and more refined in the coming years. What I am waiting for is when we can fly to places versus having to follow roads and traffic. I would still like to have an old muscle car era ride in my garage with some crazy electric car and then a vehicle I can fly to places in. I always wanted a Helicopter. I miss flying. I gave it up when I moved here.

Correct, an ICE cannot replicate the instant brutal torque an EV delivers.

Yes. Nothing like feeling the rush as you get into the power band and the change in exhaust note. A bit like racing a car on xbox compared to the real thing.

I can't see large scale flying cars. If you are a Heli pilot you will know they are difficult to fly. Half the retards on the road can't drive on a horizontal plane let alone a vehicle that adds a vertical plane. With self drive EVs on the way people may not even bother to own one. We maybe witnessing the last of "the good old days" of ICEs, when driving was still fun.

They will come but they will not be piloted by humans. They will operate via AI and will be connected to a 3 dimensional grid system. That will be after our lifetimes if I had to make a guess.

Who cares. They are boring and most of the people who like to drive fast are car enthusiasts who prefer a gas powered engine for its sounds and sensations.

I’ve yet to give an EV a thrash, only my hybrid which doesn’t really count.

That is a good analogy. There will be overkill combustion engine supercars forever

I have been into sportscars my whole life and I own a 2004 Z51 Corvette. I dont like greenies coming onto my turf with declarations like this.

Im not against electric per se. I actually want to test ride a Zero motorcycle. All electric. Would be a good application for Canada where your bike sits inside for 8 months of the year

    Hard to say.

As you get older, many things around you change without you noticing - like the speed of cars. When I was a lad 0-60mph in 7 seconds was considered fast and sub 4 seconds would only be done in a Supercar.

Now - I have something that is far from a supercar and does 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. Next week we take delivery of a car that is supposed to do it in 3.9.

To me - top end speed is pointless, I'd rather be off the line fast. I run out of road and balls at around the same time 200km/h or 130mph.

So I guess what's left is looks and prestige - and Astons, Ferraris, Lambos etc have that in spades - so I think they will be around - but it's gonna be a bit embarrassing for them to be beat off the lights by a 4 door Tesla. They are going to need to rebrand I think.
