    Trailer use in Thailand

Was wondering if anyone has any feedback on using a trailer in Thailand? I am seeing them more frequently but not sure what sort of issues people may or may not have encountered with the BIB.

Friend of mine uses one to tow his little off-roader thing. I think that other than dealing with the bureaucracy which was a bit of a pain in the arse it's no huge issue.

Thai guy at my old work brought a jetski, he said to tow it legally (it was on a proper jet ski tralier) he had to upgrade his licence......... what ever that means.

We just imported a trailer for load testing our tow bars cause all the ones sold here are shit, will be towing up to 4000kgs though.

Thats a good sized trailer. I used to tow a 12,000k lb trailer for racing. That much weight you need the right hitch assy and weight distribution bars. I brought all the good Drawtite hitch stuff when I moved over here. Sadly however with my Hilux lifted 3" plus over sized tires I need a 2" drop hitch to level the trailer proper. Albeit the trailer I am considering will have minimal tongue weight, its best for load distribution.

Company I work for makes tow bars and hitches and are tier 1 suppliers to Ford, Mazda, Toyota and Izuzu and Teir 2 to many others. Typically all our stuff is tested in our Melbourne (Australia) facility but one of our customers wants real life testing done in Thailand.

A mate had one for bikes in Bkk.

Ended up selling it and buying a van with ramps instead.

Was just too nervy of Bkk scooters and bikes in the traffic not realizing there's a trailer and speeding in behind him before getting maimed/dissected by it.

Oh I have very nice Aluminum ramps for the truck. No need for Bamboo...

I met a few guys down south to go ride with a little south of Rayong. While I love the RVF, an 860km ride is a bit of a stretch on a 400RR sport bike.

They have quite a few on the roads of Phuket, Used for jet skis road train style up to three in a row, and for transporting new large passenger speed boats and i have also seen a couple of flat top ones
None of them have license plates on or lights so they cannot be registered for use on the road but i have never seen the BIB stop one
Works on the tea money deal i think

The Upbeat trailer biz seems to handle all the documents. They say you register just like anything else and you get a "book" (Not sure what color) and you carry it with you. A single moto trailer would make taking the bike places far easier and I can load and unload by myself. I surely would not even consider purchasing one if I couldn't plate the trailer and it had all the lights etc.

I've seen legal trailers in the north, lights, plates etc. Regular two bike trailers with small ramps and also a nice small single bike trailer.

If only one bike, below are a couple options, no extra licence or registrations to worry about. No personal experience with either.

^^^^^^ that's a whole lot of weight pivoting around that hitchbox or is the rack tied back to the vehicle on the ends as well ?

Fondles, I have no idea. The guys seemed happy with them. I think with your work experience you would know far more than me about it. I'm just bored and throwing out options. There is a lot of information about Mototote online if he wants to research.

I would feel Ok using one of those for a light dirt bike 125cc or so or few Bicycles but with a sportbike and its width you would have to have that hanging out on the hitch assy which seems suspect. Figure with rack and moto 500lbs? I have seen these used in the US quite a bit but usually on big 3/4 to 1 ton trucks with hitch assemblies rated to 1200 lbs. I am not sure what the rating is on my Hilux. Never looked.

For now I am leaning on tossing it in the back of my truck but the trailer idea is still in the works.

Thanks for the replies, I do appreciate them

Yeah from a tow bar manufacturer perspective the concept is down right dangerous and put loads on the tow bar that it was never designed for was never designed for.

It depends on the rear bumper and the rig. I am seeing lots of amazing rear bumps with hitches tucked up that can tow. You in OZ do not have to deal with the angles we deal with in the states. You are flat landers.

Angle and departure are critical here in merica.

Nothing to do with departure angles.

    Taking the US by storm.

We know how to do it up right in "Merca" Snubs. I had a Chevrolet 1 ton, Long bed dually with a Duramax diesel. I would toss my camper in the back, attach the wakeboard boat and off we went.

Btw It was always quite entertaining watching people try and launch or take a boat out of the water at any marina. I witnessed some serious throwdown fights go on. My daughters used to laugh as we sat in the boat idling waiting to get our boat out. My oldest could drive our boat upon the trailer like a pro ( was 13 years old)
