If not, a phone with a "chip" capable of connecting to one of theses systems is required:

As some have realised, not all "GPS enabled" phones can "navigate" without a connectable cell tower signal. Get into the hilly or less developed parts of some countries and once the signal is lost you're back to paper maps.
