Fiat Chrysler submits proposal for a merger with Renault

Fiat Chrysler and Renault, two automakers looking to curb costs producing vehicles and pool resources for developing the next generation of automobiles, are planning a merger to create the world’s third largest automaker.

    Key Points

    • The combined business would be owned 50/50 between shareholders of FCA and Groupe Renault.
    • The joint organization would produce estimated sales of 8.7 million vehicles a year.

According to a statement from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the combined business would be owned 50/50 between shareholders of FCA and Groupe Renault. A board of governors would hold a majority of independent directors.

The merger still requires approval by the boards of both automakers.
The joint organization would produce estimated sales of 8.7 million vehicles a year and would be considered the world’s third largest car manufacturer.

Fiat Chrylser said the combined entity would generate savings of 5 billion euros annually ($5.6 billion) and be “carried out as a merger transaction under a Dutch parent company.

Why not to have just one brand? Hasn't it worked with computers? (OK, then perhaps 2 will also do...)

^Too bad Plymouth shut down...I'd like to see a 'Cuda comeback. Not really much difference between the Cuda and the Challenger though.

More Dogs than Gods in their lineups. But I'd take one of these 'pieces of shite'

Alfa Giulia QV - Nurburgring in 7.32...... yes please.

Maybe something a little more sedate:

    Maserati Gran Cabrio

Or, another piece of excrement, just for fun:

    Alfa Romeo 4C

They could probably manufacture the worst car in history with their combined quality standards.

    Wheels are all wrong but.

Contemporary rims can look good on classics but not in that case.

Nah ... I reckon they are OK.

    Personal choice.

But, IMHO it's been lowered too much.

I'm not a fan of those wheels on that particular car either...but it is a nice ride.

Wonder if that was one of the cars that had the push button shifters. My dad had one of those old Plymouths that had that, but it wasn't a Belvedere.

I presume that wasn't in Thailand where rag tops (convertibles) are as rare as *******

As an aside, if you bought it new (1984) it was the same time I started an my appreciation of Alphas buying an old GTV 1750

Was in SoCal. Convertable country. Must admit twas a fun drive but all sorts of minor but irritating probs. Topping the list was a vacumn door lock system which went tits up 6 months after I bought it. Come on, only Italians would think this was a good idea.

Hey Guido, let's run a bunch of plastic tubing from the hood to trunk to activate locks. What could possibly go wrong!

Yep, definitely not the high point of Spider production. And the plastic bits on that model year..... baaarf.
But the pneumatics? Nice idea but the execution was off.
A bit like Citroen DS and the BMC/Leyland hydrospastic suspension. Not to mention the nightmare electro-hydro-pneumatic on a MB560SEL I once owned: Lovely car but what were they smoking??

And Alfas: I've owned 4: Alfasud Ti; minimum power, maximum fun but the body just dissolved. GTV [Bertone]; every trip an event, gearchange a lucky draw, and got to use the tool kit regularly to screw things back on. Alfa75; after a so so BMW 3 series that Alfa was fun, reliable [!!] and a very quick saloon. It was so reliable I gave it to my wife to drive and bought an Alfa Sprint. Slow learner... see comments for the Alfasud.
I haven't been tempted back. Yet.

I once owned an Alfasud. My experience was the same as yours. It handled great but the body rusted away really quickly.

Despite their sophisticated engineering, Alfasuds (especially the early ones) had a bad reputation for suffering from rust, mostly due to the poor quality Russian steel used in their construction, and the storage conditions of the steel. Worse yet, bare completed bodies had to be moved outside the factory after assembly before being taken to the paint shop in a separate building, no matter what the weather happened to be.
