Pajero Sport 2019 for anyone interested

Wife and I picked up our new Pajero Sport yesterday. We did the key blessing, burned some incense, installed the Buddha Bobble head, got the flowers on the dash and at 10:39am drove it off the lot.

From the lot near Kaset Nawamin area, I drove us 643km back to Lampang Had a few stops along the way to pick up crap. Anyways great way to break it in.

My first road experience comments FWIIW

    Pros:

    • Ride quality is quite comfortable. Did not ride like a truck as many have said. But keep in mind it is not a car.
    • Interior road noise was minimal.
    • I like the overall ergonomics, stereo was easy to navigate through using the controls on the steering wheel, same with AC
    • Road view was quite nice being up a bit high, albeit I may lower it in the coming months as I will be adding a Aero kit and likely some better wheels.
    • Dual climate zone AC is very convenient as my wife loves being sub zero and I do not.
    • Handling was good
    • Runs smooth at 120 to 140km on the highway
    • Back seats have plenty of leg room and it has a drop down DVD player with wireless headphones.
    • Push button start and remote door lock
    • Styling is nice with clean body lines
    • Brakes are outstanding

    Cons:
    • Its a little sluggish off from a stop light. Its a large SUV. Being we have the Turbo Diesel option I already contacted the ECU shop for a tuner. (I always like messin around with my vehicles). Having a Turbo is free power. Just turn up the boost
    • When you have the back seats down to carry something the passenger seat gets back up against the front seat limiting it from going all the way back. This isn't an issue for a shorter person but if you are 6'2 and above this might be a deal breaker if you keep the back seats down all the time.
    • For me, too many bells and whistles. I do not like all the front warning crap and side lane alerts. But that's me. I like driving and turn them all off. Wife loves them all and its her ride, not mine. I am a truck guy.
    • No auto rear hatch close button, albeit you can add one

I will add more feedback over the coming weeks as I drive it a bit more to break it in.

Pathumthani red plates. Will you take it up to Lampang before getting white ones?

Yeah I went right after I plunked down the cash. Got stopped once at a road stop deal. Had all in order and cop smiled and sent me on my way.

Will just keep BKK plates. Don't matter to me. My scooters have plates from Phetchaburi.

I enjoyed the 1st Pajero Sport, but the new model is over-fussy with sensors. And I fecking hate the electronic handbrake feature. Sound system is rockin' though.

Congratulations!! enjoy it in good health.
When I retire in a few months and spend more time in Thailand, I will be adding to our small "vacation car" a more sustancial vehicle, and have being looking at all the options. The more I look ,the more I like the Pajero Sport. If I have my choice, White would be the color also'

you should be able to beat 99% of thais off the stop lights even checking to see if an errant 10 wheeler or motocy is running a red

thais are likely to be in park , sending messages on facebook , reflexes of a sloth and too scared to floor the accellerator

Naaah. Just roll on as normal. It is not turbo lag. Likely gearing for economy. I am speed freak so I notice stuff like that, my wife was what? I laughed

Nice ride JPPR. In c3-4 years i'll be same as Buckaroo and have for the last year kept changing my mind about either an SUV or 4 Door pick up. I suppose i could resolve this by just getting one of each but i couldn't justify that with the amount of use.

The Pajero is the one i've penciled in on the SUV side but you are right re the tech being intrusive and Buckaroo is right ref those electronic handbrakes, i fukin hate them too.

On the SUV side, the Nissan in the UK spec have revised the rear suspension layout and added a multi link set up, i've driven one and if that was available on Thai spec pick ups i'd go with the 4 door pick as the best all round compromise. I just like the idea that if i want to i can still buy a shit load of soemthing and cart it around in a pick up if needs be.

@ NPT. Interestingly I never ever use a parking brake. Never even looked at it inside. I guess it could be bothersome but it's right by the shifter and easy to use.

I still have my Revo. I will never part with it. I beat that thing up and love wheelin in it. Wife wanted a civilized SUV as my truck rides hard being lifted with mud tires on it.

Play hard until you can't is my moto. Rainy season starting. It'll be mud and swamp time soon.

Yeah. I just never found it to be anything of value. Years ago they were emergency brakes but I only used them to pitch the car side ways through a corner or yank it on in a big empty parking lot in the snow. Short of that...useless..

    What engine is in it?
    When's the blessing ceremony?
And I don't get the sharing 2 vehicles thing. You'll be getting in it all the time with the seat up to the bleedin steering wheel and some nauseous fucking rose ambi pur stink in there with Thai love songs blasting out as you fire it up

Dil, it's a 2.4 liter turbo diesel. It gave us great fuel econony from BKK to Lampang albeit I never cared much about fuel mileage when buying a vehicle.

As for my wife, she seldoms listen to the radio in the car. She is usually yakin at me...

My wife is really so not Thai.

I could never be a one car share type. I need my own to do what I want.

It should be used, especially on a slope, before selecting park. Not sure why it isn't auto disengage as with some other cars.

I am still happy with my Pajero, but don't like the 4wd low switching. Seems a bit slow to me.

Ya know its funny about parking brakes. I lived in California near SF Bay area and there are numerous steep hills and I still never used them. I guess it was because to this day I have never heard of a car that was either in park (auto trans) or 1st or reverse gear (manual tranny) go rogue and crash and hurt people. Usually the rollers or runaway vehicles are the ones that the owner left them in neutral. I think with the advent of the auto trans, parking brakes have little or no value but they need to be in there to protect insurance and auto makers from the one or two people that are dopes.

    A few other comments as I drive it FWIIW;

    • The fuel tank on the Pajero is huge. So if you are a driver and do not like to stop at every PTT on a road trip its convenient. On the flip side is fill up cost. When we left the dealership it had just under a 1/4 tank. I drove it until the light came on. I filled up and it was 2040 bht but I drove us straight through to Lampang and still had half a tank.

    • The running boards or door steps as some call them, They are a bit awkward for me, my wife said the same. The Pajero sits at a height that you can almost just get in with out having the running boards. But having them there I seem to always have to step out a bit when exiting to avoid rubbing my calf on them. I think its because the running boards are set under too far. Getting in is OK, but getting out is annoying.

Nice reliable , safe and comfortable vehicles.
Owned the similar Shogun for 12 years untill rust got the better of it.
Probably the best car on the market in that range and hold their value well.

I think one thing to consider over here (and likely anywhere for that matter) is buying something that based on reports and ownership feedback that they will last and be reliable, the service is reasonable and good especially if you drive all over Thailand like my wife and I do. If I was a type that hung around the local area where I live, I doubt I would buy one. Just buy a econobox grocery getter'. I usually keep cars 10+ years. I am however getting to an age now where these could be my last ones.

Although, I have to say I would REALLY like a Subaru WRX 3.0 to mess with. WIfe gives me the "WTF Eye" when I look at them. . I could have some serious fun up here in the mountains in one...

Wife's Pajero Sport has a trouble free 75k on it. Totally stock [I've got other cars to waste my time modding]. Good fuel economy, drives quietly and handles okay for a truck-based SUV. My main niggle is the centre console hard edge annoys my left knee, but okay for shorter people I guess and I don't drive it much. I was wary of the electronics, but no problems so far. The downside of occasional false positives is easily outweighed by the fact it may save your/someone else's life one day. You know, like seatbelts.
Lastly, the computer says NO when I turn the ignition off before selecting Park; requires a restart and correct shutdown sequence. Kinda like an Airbus.

Most new "cars" have some some of "hill assist" braking, believe Pajero has, my car has, I would use handbrake in a manual, auto - no point.

I noticed the "cockpit" area as I call it is very sports car like. I am not sure about previous years but the 2019 has a padded corner area installed in the center console where knee and leg my sit on a long drive. I found it interesting that the Pajero has paddle shifters. In looking you cannot manually set up shifting at the console control, You click to manual then have to control with the paddles. I personally like my Hilux Revo where L1, L2, L3 etc are controlled at the shifter. Paddle shifters are great in higher end sports cars IMHO

I hope my comments and views are seen just as that. I am not complaining just pointing out observations. Years back I used to do consumer driver/test reviews for Chevrolet. Was fun and I got to drive the new releases for a week.

I wouldn't see those observations as complaints JPPR2. Nice to see they fixed the centre console edge! Transmission-wise, wife's older model can manual shift +/- after the sideways shift from Drive. Similar to a Porsche Tiptronic etc. Speaking of sports cars, I'm not sure where they got the 'Sport' from in 'Pajero Sport' [though I'm equally bewildered by the lack of RennSport in the Civic RS]: It's not a weapon for the twisties, so I thought the paddle shifters a bit form over function, but they are handy during technical off road driving.
