I was being, or trying to be sarcastic hence the question mark at the end.
We all know statistics can be made to support whatever line of argument you want to take.
I would start to believe a little more if they started counting those that don't die at the scene in the numbers.

Statistical data notwithstanding - numbers can be presented to support any opinion.

Until Thailand begins to enforce their existing laws, equally, fairly, and without prejudice, the population will continue to ignore and sneer at the so called "Police Force".

And, until traffic law enforcement is implemented, road deaths will continue to rise.

A few times people have overtaken me on my right only to immediately turn left right in front of me. The first time it happened I was not expecting it, particularly because I was already adjacent the side street and there was plenty of room to my left to come past on the inside. The idiot could have either come up the inside or slowed down for 0.5 seconds but chose to come up the outside and turn left right in front of me. I hit him. He took off.
Now I'm wary of the manouvre and the close calls have been just that.

Then there's the wankers that overtake when you slow down indicating a right turn!

Or they pass you on the right, over a line with incoming traffic, when the lane on your left is open.

Toodling along 3rd Rd, no hurry, coach coming up to overtake so moved over a bit, retard mosai also wants to overtake, can't wait so synchronises with coach, I know it's coming so slow down, his offside mirror clips coach, nearside mirror clips my mirror, both wobble without a fall, he speeds up, turns around with that inane apologetic grin we all know and love, straight into the back of a baht bus, ty karma.

Following retard mosai down the hill to Pattaya, both inside lane with me outside, he's chatting to gf on pillion and been indicating left from the top so obviously forgotten, as we near the lights I wonder what's the dumbest thing he could do just as he did it, no look, sharp right into the junction, gave a blast on my air horn, pointless, no fall but my front wheel ends up clipping gf, she climbs off with an ooh ahh grabbing left leg, me and mate in hysterics, retard looks at us like 'what', mate tells him she got the wrong leg, he looks, shrugs and drives off scolding her.

RTP are here to enforce real laws like theft and murder. They couldn't give a rat's wotsit for traffic misdemeanors, except for the tea money it generates.

    And some whinge about Thais

In the states wrecks are like gun violence. We are so used to endless daily wrecks they only make news when its 5 or more. If a wreck kills 3 or someone shoots only a few it doesn't make news...

there on the news was a classic example of what you post[first line]
yesterday a Toyota was about to do a right turn on what appeared to be a 3lane motorway,as he approached in his lane a suv.[woman] driver came from behind the Toyota at fast speed, she was not turning right but thought she would get past the vehicle that was about to turn right, well she took out the Toyota and killed 2.one of which was a TV host.this happened in chiang mai.
I am glad I can never drive again.

    It's smart.
When I taught my son to drive in NZ, even though NZ roads are way safer than here, I hammered it in that he may be the best driver in the world but he has to drive as if there are idiots out there and to always expect the worst.

If the lane on your left is open, you should be in that, not hogging up the overtaking lane.

As you say it's the hogging that causes accidents by forcing drivers to undertake. I feel safer when the inside lane is empty and it stays that way if clear from back, otherwise move in, let them go and out again. Every little bit helps when you know some retard out there's trying to kill you but not how or when.

Of course, the problem with that is the left lane typically has the topography of the Himalayas due to a million overloaded trucks and a midday temperature that melts stone.

There's part of the problem, the attitude that the driver has to do something stupid because his mission to get wherever is paramount. Nobody is "forced" to overtake or undertake.

That's so true in principle but the sad reality is that if a driver waits for ideal conditions then he'll never get anywhere.

If you're traveling 80kph on a road that's listed at 50kph, you aren't hogging up the road. If someone is in that much of a hurry, leave the house earlier, or better yet, don't assume you own the road and pass on the left like any sane person would. But then again, this is Thailand

Not a near miss this time and not me either but another of Thailand's tragedies...

Last Friday evening, after the school open day, three youngsters went off on two bikes and had a race down the main road. A pick-up decided to speed up and follow them. The kids' bikes touched, off they went and the pick-up made mincemeat of them. All three dead and all under 15. I only found out because one of the kids is in the same class as the boy I look after.

The pick-up driver may have been an innocent witness to the accident, but I'm not so sure with the way I've seen them react in the past. All the same it's three young lives lost due to a lack of awareness and responsibility from their parents...

Yep, tiz tragic and you see this all over Thailand. Kids hopping on "their" or parents mopeds after school, racing around, no helmet, no road sense, no Licence and no real understanding of what it means to have an accident - still i think we all felt invincible when younger
