    So I bought a Mk1 Escort

Basically, I saw an advert on a retro Facebook page and thought fuck it, I’m having that.

The owner said he would drive it from Sukhothai to Songkhla for me and though I said something along the lines of ‘don’t you fucking dare, I’ll pay for transport’ - he decided the transport cash could save him a few quid, bullshitted me and paid someone to drive it the 1,400km Journey. The car made it, just. Some repairs required but nothing too serious.

So id paid a deposit and the next day I offered a little bit more leaving him 20k + whatever he paid the driver short of the original deal. As far as I’m concerned, I’d bought the car and he had no fucking right to do that. Anyway, it was all very civilized l and we both agreed on the outcome.

    Here she is:

    Cracking motor

Makes a change though - most blokes don't buy an old escort - they marry an old hooker.

Let me go all 'Strain, and say 'That's a bloody beut mate.'

That really looks good, and I'm not usually one for classics.

The interior looks good but it costs nothing to get that redone. What's under the bonnet?

Going all Classic Ferrari tan is always a good addition.

Thought the Mk1 may have been something like that originally.

Just got her on Friday and came back to Brunei Yesterday.

Will get a bettwr feel for it when I get home. Decide weather to keep her restored or do a full makeover.

Might get a 2 door for that though, although a conversion can be done.

Turns out that Ford had an assembly plant in Thailand from 1973 to 1976 with was a joint partnership with Mazda called Motor Assembly Alliance (MAA) or something like that.

The book for for my one has the Thai year equivalent of 1975 and the tin plate says ‘assembled in Thailand’ on it.

First new car my old man ever bought. Absolute belter. Simple Ford engine, very little to go wrong and very easy to fix, although parts might be an issue these days.
Enjoy it for what it is Dirk, a classic.

Back seats need slashing and it's missing a few dents but otherwise I've enjoyed driving something similar in my youth...

I used to run a garage. We had an Escort come in with a 3 litre Granada engine. It was fast.

    Just saying like...

Are spare parts....both new and secondhand.....readily available in Thailand ? What if you need something basic like a clutch plate or brake pads ?

BTW, some Escorts had Weber carbies, which are great for fuel economy. Does this one ?

Cast iron head, or alloy ? Whichever it is, the spots of rusty water on the engine indicate that it has not had coolant (corrosion inhibitor) for a while. First thing I would do would be fit a new thermostat (just because they're cheap, and are the prime cause of overheating problems), then put coolant in it.

It's manual, not auto ? Change the gearbox oil. People neglect it all the time. In fact, I'd change all fluids (brake fluid included).

Nice. I have no doubt you can get various new consumable parts such as clutch plate or brake pads from Segedins in Auckland. Songkhla has a few classics lurking around the roads. Vintage VW Beetles and Kombis are not rare, I saw a Holden 179, and theres quite a few yank tanks.

It will officially be vintage soon. Is it 50 years to be vintage?

The partnership with Mazda is called Auto Alliance Thailand and was founded in the mid 90's.

Fords of your escorts era would have been assembled by Anglo-Thai Motors which was renamed "Ford Thailand" in the mid to late 70's.

Nice esky by the way, always had a soft spot for them.
