Not many of them left in that condition, most are rust buckets or long gone to the scrap yard.

    Good investment!

Some of the Mexico's are going for £40,000 +

Just as an update to this my wee Escort has not been forgotten about.

When I got home a month or so after starting this thread I got to work on it straight away.

It just wasn't running right at all, jumping all over the place and being real temperamental.

Carbs... I hate carbs. But we (my mechanic and I) were convinced the problem lay here. Looked like the jet had been bored out and with a thin wire through it there was definite improvement. I bought a size range of 3 new jets from USA and when they arrived, they had the wrong fucking thread on them.

Long story short and a vast amount of frustration, research and visiting every suggestion offered in reply to a facebook post requesting advice, it turned out to be the distributer. A clean up of some corrosion and she was running sweet, for a few days.

I bought a brand new distributor off ebay and now she runs great. I've bought some other bits too and when I get home (currently working in Israel) I'll be driving her around as my every day car. Then when I'm due back to work she'll go back to the shop for a strip down and painting.

She really hasn't cost me much, so far:

    Boot seal: £14.50
    2 X Head Gasket: £17.98
    Carburetor Gasket: £4.95
    Heavy Duty Gearbox Mount: £49.99
    Alternator upgrade to 55AMP: £66.95
    Distributor: £68.75
    2 X Rocker Cover Gasket: £6.90
    Oil Fill Cap: £4.99
    Haynes Manual: £5

    Unwanted jets: $100

tow, small bits n bobs + mechanic bill B6000

About B16,000 all in so far.

Next up is painting, new windscreen and windows all round and some kind of working handbrake. Interior will be last, mostly around the dash and console.

The question is, What colours should I paint it?
    Lang may yer lum reek...

Here's one identical for sale on Gumtree UK

    So I bought a Mk1 Escort-_86-jpg

£12,250 asking price at today's rate is B445,000 but as a normal (non-brexit-affected) exchange rate that is more like B600,000+

More pics and info here - https://www.gumtree.com/p/ford/ford-...973/1348924171

I will sell this car once I'm finished and find a new project, sticking to RWDs until I have generated enough for a beast of a classic to keep for my midlife crisis!

Cool car, I've a few straight sixes for sale if anyone is interested. No joke. Loads of parts. May even sell the Stang for the right price.

The red as pictured is pretty nice. Blue tends to suit Eskies also.

SR20DET in that one, I would buy it right now if I could afford it.

    Me too it's cool.

Expensive obviously but also worth it considering all the work that has gone into it: engine, rebuild, brakes etc.

I'd also prefer others for that kind of money though.

Yeah that's my problem too. To have that kind of cash for a vehicle there are so many options. Less for RWD though.

I find myself wasting away the hours sitting offshore trawling through the likes of Kaidee just seeing the possibilities. One day... one day...

Then I find myself trawling through uk motors on Gumtree and how incredible cheap they are and it seriously makes me consider living there again for a few years.

I know what you mean, I'm forever trawling the Intrawebs looking.

But I already own two cars back home (and potentially a third soon) plus my little Datto here so buying another would probably also result in a costly divorce.

    It's really tempting isn't it?

My wife looks at my Escort with sheer disgust and refuses to get in it, and I'm ok with that haha

Ditto mine with the Datsun but her car was recently in for some work so she was forced to drive it.

Better yet I'd taken the front bumper off to replace it but hadn't got around to it so she got stopped and fined for no front plate and the cop told her if it had been me / a foreigner driving he wouldn't have bothered cos he couldn't speak English.

    Oh how I laughed...quietly...to myself...out of earshot.

I got it running well and reliable, but in the end it was just too slow with the original old 1300L engine.

It sat for a while while I was away and although it still starts second time every time it’s not really good enough to drive on the road.

So, I’ve been been looking for someone to do an overhaul and basically just keep the shell and build something mean inside.

An I started project as I’m struggling to find someone locally.

That white SR20 a little farther up the page... I enquirer about it end of last year, made a plan to go view it in CM but I’ve not been able to get up there.

there’s also a guy in Bangkok pumping out old BMWs like E36 etc with JZ turbos (Supra engines) at a very reasonable price in showroom condition. Which could be cheap fun. Talking less that 200k here.
