Great score ! Excellent cars with a distinctive starter motor sound.
    Love the British Commuting Green.
Theyre only original once so it might be best to boganise another car.
Fitting Vintage Air (conditioning) might be good but if it’s a 1.3 / auto drivetrain you won’t be accelerating very fast.

OK up a size but a mate of mine had a Cortina Savage

That Escort V6 could have been from South Africa. Or at least the idea. They had weird combinations back then. Like 3 litre V6 MkIII Cortina pickups.

    I had a Mk4 bakkie with a 4.1 straight 6, great pickup.

Sadly was burnt to a crisp in a house fire.

Boganize. Made me laugh with that thought. Good idea though as you've a valid point. It's only original once. Funny choice of words bro, I may have said cannibalize a parts car if you can find a beater laying around.

Cool car btw, hope she services you well. Reminds me of the day my old man bought a 1970 AMX two seater with a 390 4 speed at a police auction. I wasn't old enough to see over the dash let alone drive it but I'd dream of it. Too bad he sold it or it be next to the old stang now.

X brother in law had a 70 ish GTO. 400cu in. That brings back a few memories. A friend of his had a Dodge Charger of the era. Another with a Nova 350cu in.

My 1st car was a Plymouth Fury 3 with a 383cu in automatic. I stepped up to a 71 satellite with the same engine after I wrapped the Fury through 55 feet of fence along the freeway that the city billed me 2000 usd for. Thats a story in itself perhaps for another time.

Thanks for the memories now go make a few yourself.

    Good luck with it.....

    fish.

Technically if you go to Goodwood? Vintage is 1919 to 1930. Veteran is before 1919 if you go to Brighton.

All others are Antique or, if special, Classic.

Nice purchase, Dirk. I have fond memories of the old Mk1. Learned to drive in one, and had a few adventures in it as a teenager. Enough said.

Ahhh, ok. I thought it was age, not year, because obviously as the years roll on, a car from 1970 will get to be 50 or 60 and worthy of a classification, as were the "vintage" cars in 1970.

Cast iron head, or alloy ? Whichever it is, the spots of rusty water on the engine indicate that it has not had coolant (corrosion inhibitor) for a while. First thing I would do would be fit a new thermostat (just because they're cheap, and are the prime cause of overheating problems), then put coolant in it.

It's manual, not auto ? Change the gearbox oil. People neglect it all the time. In fact, I'd change all fluids (brake fluid included).
Parts are readily available from UK, and standard parts should be easy enough to find since the guys modding them are basically stripping everything out before they start. Surely they keep anything of value.

No idea about the carbies etc, I got it late at night and was preparing for travel the next day so will get a better look when I get home.

Thanks for the advice, and yeah it's manual, I'm taking notes!

You're absolutely right, I've decided to keep this one original, if possible, and find a 3 door to boganise to the max. My Mrs is gonna flip.

It already has A/C and it's really bloody good.

I think I like the hairdresser car better.

This Mk1 sort of reminds me of the German Opel I had when I was 17...

Nice one. Don't mind the ole Escorts.

Inquired about buying this one a wee while back but never heard anything back so presumably they don't want to sell:

Also seen this drift van that has a 2JZ in it and is a bit bonkers

I'd love an old classic like an old Escort or even those Datsun vans have grown on me now.... if I knew my way around an engine..... or breaking down and using hard shoulders didn't put the willies up me so much in Thailand

Easy mate, best way to learn is just get in there and get your hands dirty....... or just fuck that off and buy one already done with an engine swap and has the reliability.

And Aircon, fuk driving around Thighland in a 70s car with Vinyl seats and no aircon - you'll have no skin left where your underpants don't stop you sticking to the seat

Most would have aircon I reckon, either original or retro-fitted.

Piece of piss to get those under-dash units installed anyways.

1.3 .... That was luxury, we had the 1.1 (!) and used to go on holidays for 6 weeks every year dragging a trailer with all the camping gear!

That looks remarkably similar to the old Mercury Capri from the early '70s. They had almost identical bodies, but bigger engines. They came with either a 2? liter four or a 2.8 liter V6. They usually had manual transmissions and were quite sporty cars for that era.

    So I bought a Mk1 Escort-220px-1973_capri_2600_enhanced-jpg
