Seems the tourism business in Samui is forcing prices down. Many shops hotels and bars suffering and or closing down. Not sure if the low season just makes it look worse but there are a few unhappy teddy bears around here.

Can anyone recommend a guy w/ a van or pickup and driver that can pick me and the wife (and baggage) up at the BKK airport? I want to go from the airport to Khon Kaen the early morning (1am) of 1st Sept.

Right now some of the car companies have one way specials on. Too many cars in the wrong place. Do some googling.

The travel companies are advising holidaymakers that there is a shortage of hire cars in europe due to the recession.

Don't know how that affects the market here with imports being so expensive.

Somchai will get his kid brother to do it for a slug of lao khao, so I doubt there is a proper organisation that does that sort of thing, unless you're looking at prestige cars.

    You have to be brave.

I've spent plenty of time in Thailand and I don't know if driving there is a great idea? To be more honest, I'm affriad to drive in Thailand. LOL

Just walking accross a busy street in Bangkok is challenging enough for me. Some people just walk into the middle of traffic and are fine. I'm a bit more careful.

Been really happy with the prices and service of Budget.co.th but as of October they have jacked their prices WAY up so I'm looking for alternatives. Used to get the 2-door Vigo for ~600 baht/day and the 4 door 4WD Vigo for just under 900 baht/day but those prices have nearly doubled this month.

Anyone have any recommendations for other good value rental companies in Bangkok?

    Cheers!

^ Dude... I needed a pickup on short notice and all the usual places (Budget, Avis, ThaiRentACar, SiamCarARent) were booked out, so I gave Highway Car Rent a try since they were the only place in town that could supply a pickup.

And their rate, 1200 baht/day wasn't cheap, but all the rental companies jack their rates up this time of year.

But the truck... WTF?! ~258,xxx km on a beat to shit old Vigo that they didn't even bother to wash. Gave it to me dusty and covered in bird shit. Went around with the lady to note all the damage and there wasn't a single panel, fender or skirt on the entire truck that wasn't scratched or dented. A real beater...

    And the inside was worse!!

It's like someone had rolled around in a tub of oil before settling in and staining the entire inside of the vehicle, even the ceiling was splattered in oil!

And there was cigarette ash all over the place and cigarette burns in both front seats.

Also discovered an ant nest hiding somewhere in the parking brake assembly. (The little speck in the pic below is an ant...) Unfackingbelievable!!!

Then I discovered later that evening that the brake lights didn't work! How dangerous is that?!

I only needed the truck for a few days and this was the only one available, but FFS, how can anyone recommend this outfit?!

Sure the big companies are a bit more expensive, but their vehicles are clean, low mileage and in good repair.

    Highway Car Rent... AVOID!!!

Does not surprise me one bit that you would promote Highway Car Rent- the deplorable condition of that truck matches your personality perfectly.

American interests? You do realize that companies like Avis and Budget are franchise operations, yes? Wasn't aware that Thai Car Rent and Siam Rent A Car are American companies...

Happy New Year ya fekkin loon!
