Interesting Story from a Phuket Expat

I've cut and pasted this post from the Phuket Forum of TV. After a recent post, someone asked where he'd been as he hadn't posted in a long time:

"I have been in Phuket prison on remand for a traffic accident in which 2 local underaged kids died on a motorbike who crash into me. 19 months waiting in prison for my day in court. 300,000 bail bond i did not have it.

Was not my fault and did not bow down to pressure for money compensation. I refuse all offers for help. Even 50,000 baht i can get out if i admit my guilt. No way. I will deported from my life here for something i did not have fault.

I get to court to represent myself and win the cases. Charges thrown out and i have been vindicated and free to leave. I never give up my fight.

Paid nothing not one baht and freedom is mine now to enjoy with clear conscious.

The legal system is fair here. Is what i can say. My faith is restored 100%.

I was suspended on thaivisa yes but all i had to do was provide email that is valid. I could not do it from prison.

My advice to all is get dashcam front and rear windows. Your life can get turned upside down in a heartbeat.

I wish to say no more in this topic."

These horror stories give you a reality check occasionally. Good on him but god, 19 months in a thai jail. Sound advice re the dash cam. its another one of these decisions where some penny pinchers won't buy them and will risk the consequences for a few thousand Baht, for me its a no brainer in any car in Thailand. Having one is not a guaranteed legal outcome but not having one feels like stupidity.

A follow up post that he's just made:

"I could not have done it without food coming from my wife daily and books to read. Steven King must have crazy dreams.

They allow people to bring you 3 meals a day.

Prison food and maybe i give up. Its putrid.

Now i will make merit at the temple and be thankful for what i have. "

    Presumably he means the 50K.

Surely he should have paid that just for his wife's benefit?

Well, that would have been my excuse.

Maybe his missus sneaked the 50K into someone's drawer at the station and hasn't told him.

That is the really scary part of the post. 19 months in prison because he could not stump up a bail bond of 300K baht (somewhat less than 10K US$)?

    Yikes.

It's a reason why I only drive/ride vehicles in Thailand that have first class insurance with bail bond included.

he is right though, judicial system here is mostly fair if you are really innocent

the problem is when you strike deals with the evil (police) and expect to get a freebie from a judge,

that said, 50K to get out early, I think everyone will have done it, just out of convenience, not because they felt guilty

The 50k was if he pleaded guilty.

Principles are all well and good and credit to him for standing firm, but having been acquitted his life was still turned upside down with the physical and emotional indignity and uncertainty of a Thai jail, on principle, through no fault of his own.

As others have said, cams could help avoid the need for them.

Bail bond is an optional extra when taking out insurance?

Better man than me...I doubt I would have managed 19 months. I guess I'll go for the second dashcam to guard my rear...

    It is.

I've only ever gotten 1st class insurance which is the most comprehensive, and includes Bail Bond for xxxk thb. Don't think that 2nd or 3rd class include it.

Got a mate of mine out of the shit one Friday evening as the Thais were all lying about what happened and the Rozzers wanted to take him in for a shake down. Insurance guy turns up, rozzers lost all interest and foked off.

Thai insurance companies are now legally obliged to offer 5-10% discount on your premium if you have a dashcam, if you ask them. You will typically need to send a few pics of it installed, from the front showing the number plate etc.

I'll just film using my phone in my left hand.

I'll need a straw for my beer though.

So that's why you have such a sky-high opinion of yourself.

    You're Doctor Strange.
