    If only i'd known.

Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III sets new muscle car mark at $1m-plus

THE Australian muscle car record has been hit out of the park with a seven-figure price paid for a Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III once owned by Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson.
Lloyds Auctions sold the pristine and provenanced car for “more than $1 million” at its weekend auction in Bathurst.
The GTHO cost $5000 when it rolled off the production line in 1971 and was the world’s fastest four-door passenger car.

^^ I was going to the the result directly from their website, but closed the page and the purchase price
dissapeared and thought no-one would believe me.

    The colours above arn't true.

Direct link is here ... https://www.lloydsonline.com.au/LotD...06&lid=1434477

Description: GTHO PHASE 3 'BIG RED'
    Year: 1971
    Make: Ford
    Model: Falcon
    Series: GTHO Phase 3
    Body: 4 Door
    Engine: V8
    Transmission: 4-Speed Manual
    Colour: TRACK RED
    Seats: 5
Description/Extras: The GTHO Phase III is the holy grail of Aussie Fords with a reputation born on the racetrack and bred on the streets.
The Ford Falcon XY GTHO Phase III was the only car to have if you wanted to dominate on the street or the race track in 1971.

Allan Moffat knew this and took the win at Mt Panorama that year, with four GTHOs finishing in the top five.
Further proof of the GTHOs potency was out of the top ten starters, eight were GTHO Phase III.

The Phase III is the greatest Aussie muscle car of all time and this Track Red example and is one of the best GTHOs in existence today.

This car is finished in Track Red and has a known and documented chain of ownership from new, with custodians who have continually
loved, respected and cared for the car and its legacy throughout.

One of those custodians was legendary Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson who owned the car for nearly a decade, during which time
it gained the nickname ‘Big Red’, which is what the car has been known as ever since.

Following on from Thomson the car was held in a private collection by a well-known GT Falcon enthusiast who kept this car unaltered
over the course of his ownership for close to three decades, which says something of its originality as that custodian had multiple GTHOs
which were restored but he never changed Big Red as it was perfect from the start.

This GTHO is one of the best Phase IIIs that has been made available to the public since they were on the showroom floor.

A very original example right down to the seat belts, spare tyre, interior, carpets; this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to sample
greatness unaltered by restorations, callous owners and time, the driving experience is arguably better than new.

Cars this original are few and far between, and a Phase III this good coming on the market is something that will be spoken of in awe
    for generations to come.

This 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III could be the most valuable Australian muscle car ever sold.

Pffft... I'd prefer an E49 Charger or HK Monaro (in that order) anyways.

Pretty sure a Phase IV that changed hands 10+ years ago has that distinction.

Still though, a million+ for a Shaker would have countless bogons who're now in their 50's and 60's crying a little. Or a lot

A mate of mine had a Phase 3 GTHO (sometime around 1980)
He also owned an almost identical looking Falcon with just a 6 cyl.

He had to travel quite a lot for work, so he said it was much cheaper to own the 2 cars, than just the GTHO due to the different fuel consumption of both.

I bet he wishes that he still had the HO now...

Eye of the beholder and all that.

I’ve owned a couple Fords in my time (XW and XY included) but much prefer Chrysler and Holden.

An XY Falcon, highly unlikely but remotely possible.
A Phase 3 GTHO, no fucking chance.

There are a fair number of XW, XY and XA Falcons, Fairmounts and Fairlanes in Thailand. Nearly all of them have been converted to some type of Japanese engine and transmission.

^Trying to recall all the Australian made cars I've ever seen here, but am yet to see an XW to XA vintage Falcon on the roads. Have seen a few ZC Fairlanes, HT Brougham's, HQ's, LC / LJ Torana's, and plenty of Commodores.

No Phase III Shakers though thank God, can you imagine how many centimeters a Thai driver would have got in one of those before wrapping it around a pole killing everyone onboard?. They can't handle a 1600cc 4-pot so a 351 Cleveland @ 6000rpm might be a bit too much for them . I suppose if they binned the engine and put an Isuzu diesel in....

    All of which reminds me...

This chap in Indos who is apparently somewhat of a Aust car collector wanted a Charger but couldn’t find one so just made his own out of a four door:

Quite ingenious if you ask me. That particular pic isn’t the greatest but despite the proportions being off it doesn’t actually look half bad.

I see Gosford Car Museum is having an auction soon also. Must be the season for it. Some real beauties there.

I've been eyeing up a E37 Charger but unfortunately the import taxes in NZ make it prohibitively expensive.

Ah the car dreams as a 9 year old becoming affordable.

Leave it behind as a dream. Newer cars are more fun, safer and dependable. Or join this or that clubs prepubescent masturbation.

he told me it was expensive and pretty rare, imported it illegally through Malaysia, couldn't drive it here since no official paper

all those cars are ugly anyway, so wouldn't know for sure, they all look the same, and wouldn't drive one even if I was getting paid for it

The moment someone starts talking 'more safe / reliable / economical' etc. etc. in relation to new cars cf. classics the question immediately becomes not if but just how far they've complately missed the point by.
