    Car Interior Headlining

A week ago the interior headlining of my wife's 2008 Honda Accord 2.4 started to sag. We bought the car new, and as it's always been a second car has very low mileage (22,000 km in fact). Thailand's climate isn't great for any form of adhesive, as numerous pairs of shoes and flip flops that have been thrown away testifies.

Anyway, what I thought would be a simple job of taking down and re-gluing wasn't the case, as a new headlining has to be installed (checked this out, and it's true). So, took it to our Honda dealer, and was quoted 12,000 baht for a new headlining, with labour being extra.

On the recommendation of a friend, she took it to a shop that specialises in car upholstery. Rather than use the same fabric material as the original, they ordered from Honda the pseudo leather that clads the seat backs and doors to match the real leather of the seats.

Had to wait a couple of days for the material arrive, and it was installed this morning for 4000 baht total. Really pleased with the end result and testament again that sometimes Thais can and do quality work.

The roof interior when the original headlining was removed (good to see that the side curtain airbags really do exist::

    and the finished result:

That's a very neat and professional job, and at a great price.

You're certain that the new material doesn't interfere with the curtain airbags popping out ?

She checked, and no, the new material is sealed the same as the original, and hence would operate in exactly the same way.

^post up the before pics PAG...

    Looks like a good job

If it is just the fabric sagging from the moulded plastic headliner then there is aerosol glue that you can spray in the gap (using a WD40 style tube poked through a small hole in the loose fabric) and then press the fabric back up.

If the headliner mould itself is sagging then you have to replace it

That was a good price for a replacement

The link shows how Ed China did it in a VW Golf. Very different but still of interest. From about 11 minutes in.

Will the new headlining need to go to the Wat. To get new gold thumb prints etc.?

M'Sahib or the headlining? No mention of any guarantee at the time, and the job was done 9 months ago and everything is still good.

With your avatar I would not suggest anything bad about the M'Shiab.

The new headliner certainly does look good.

BUT there is a problem with using the seat back material in a location where airbags are in place. The tear strengths of the OEM headliner and the seat back material are completely different
That is why the OEM headliner is so expensive. It would have to be tested to allow the airbags to fully inflate in the nanoseconds required by most of the regulatory authorities where the car is sold. Its not the cost of the material, its the testing and compliance that is where the cost comes from.

Replacing with a non approved (for the application) material in some countries can void any claim by insurance companies.
Probably not in the LOS though.
