    Selling a car in Thailand

My wife is selling her car.
A prospective buyer (Russian) from Phuket wants to buy but has raised the following issue.
The car was bought new in Chonburi and wifey has never seen the need to register the car in Phichit province.
The buyer reckons that wife'sThai ID card, blue book, House book, sale agreement and Power of Attorney from my wife to her sister are not enough, and short of driving to Chonburi province from Phichit to change the registration it is not possible.

He wants my wife to supply a power of attorney to him to allow him to register and move the car to Phuket. She is not going to do this!

Do any of our members know if the Ruski is being factual?

As we are in Oz her sister would have to meet the prospective buyer in Phitsanulok- driving to Chonburi would be way beyond her capabilities.

I believe you can register a motor anywhere you want. Some people around me have their cars registered in Bangkok and Korat.

seller need to provide power of attorney to transfer ownership if owner does not want to deal with going to DLT.

Sister cannot sell the vehicle as she is not the owner.

What if she is given 'power of attorney'?

The seller does not need to be present so long as you have the required signed photocopies of their ID and their signature on the title transfer application form.
    This link may help Iceman.

As in my original post the sister does have power of attorney. My wife will not be present, however surely the POA allows my SIL to transact the sale.

The buyers problem is that he states he cannot re-register the vehicle in Phuket as
A)it cannot be done in Phitsanulok as the vehicle is registered in Chonburi.
    B) the POA given to sister does not allow the transfer without a separate POA to the new owner allowing him to re-register.

Thanks for the link, I am thinking the info therein may be a bit simplified and does not address re -registering in different regions

Yeah missed the bit about the sister having POA, I assume a second POA from her will be needed, or she goes to the DLT and does the transfer with the buyer.

Vehicle does not need to be re-registered, just a simple name change in book and can be done at any DLT.

If the buyer wants to change the province it is registered it it can be done and no need to return to Chonburi, saying that it can only be done at the head DLT of the province...... I wanted to change one of my cars from BKK to Chonburi, I could only do this at the Chonburi DLT, Pattaya one could not do it, too much hassle so just left it registered in BKK.

Cheers Fondles and Pragmatic. Much clearer now.

Thailand manages to complicate even simple transactions.
