Thread: Bangkok Second Most Car Congested City In The World

This just reinforces why I don't live in Bangkok.

TomTom (TOM2) today released the results of the TomTom Traffic Index 2017, the annual report detailing the cities around the world with the most traffic congestion. Mexico City once again takes the top spot with drivers in the Mexican capital expecting to spend an average of 66% extra travel time stuck in traffic anytime of the day (7% percentage points up on last year), and up to 101% in the evening peak periods versus a free flow, or uncongested, situation – adding up to 227** hours of extra travel time per year.


Next in the global rankings are Bangkok (61%), Jakarta (58%), Chongqing (52%) and Bucharest (50%), making up the top five most congested cities in the world.

There is more to Bangkok than traffic fumes and intelligent people find it to be an enthralling city. Obviously, Americans struggle to see its finer points but other nationalities embrace if for the city of culture it is.

Jakarta hasn't even got a metro system yet, has it? I'm surprised to hear about Bucharest (might have expected Moscow), but not so much by Chongqing... I guess China and India are high on the list when you extend it to a top 100.

Having driven around BKK and Mexico city I found Mexico alot worse maybe it was a bad day

Nope. Never wanted to live in Bangkok all the 20 years prior to meeting my wife and visiting Thailand. Great place to spend a few days, but definitely not my cup of tea. Yes, there is a form of rapid transit, but it will not put you everywhere you want to go. If I wanted to live in a city, it would be something similar to Barcelona.

When I first saw Bangkok it had a dark/orange cloud hanging over it. This has disappeared. The advent of the Skytrain, now also the underground system, has allowed the city to have far more efficient public transport and less pollution. Traffic congestion is no longer a major problem in Bangkok as most normal people do not seek to drive there and are content with the terrific infrastructure which is place.

In a few weeks I will be staying in the heart of Bangkok and the traffic will be no problem because I can get almost anywhere within the confines of the city in under thirty minutes. I can think of no city in the world which has the variety of modes of transport that exist in Bangkok.

Bangkok is a great place and I love it.

No, I am not. Public transport in Bangkok is fantastic. Taxis and tuk tuks are useful in some parts but the alternatives - Skytrain, Underground, River boat taxis and klong boats enable anybody the means of rapid travel throughout the city.

I will be staying in the Asia Hotel on my next visit and there is no hotel in the world which is better served by public transport.

Fair enough, if you insist on driving in Bangkok ot getting into a taxi at peak times then the congestion will affect your plans. With a minimum of common sense travel in Bangkok is easier than London or Paris.

Tourist who should not even be commenting. Getting from the Asia Hotel to your job in Ramkhamhaeng in the mornings, and home in the evenings. That is what most Bangkokians deal with on a daily basis.

Who are you to say who and what other posters should or should not comment on ? I do not have a job in Ramkhamhaeng and if I did it would be simple to get there. Do most Bangkokians work in Ramkhamhaeng ? Does nobody work anywhere else ? You are not only old but seriously misguided as well. My cousin went to university there and she never complained.

Jakarta is a 100 times worse. I've heard Mexico City is pretty bad, Manila is worse than Bangkok.

But it does dilute your opinion somewhat that the thread is about traffic in Bangkok. You don't live there and apparently use public transport.

Just an observation.

As Klong Toey says simply pick your travelling time and /or the best method and route to get where you are going. Car too slow use a scooter, weather is usually OK. I know a guy who travels 50km each way to work on a scooter saves him more than an hour over car travel.

I visit frequently and know the city intimately. Likewise, Paris and London. I cannot live everywhere at the same time and if I wish to change my location I need to travel and visit. This is the same sequence of events regardless of my destination. Travel and visit. That's how it works.

My choice of hotels is determined by the ease of travel around the city using that hotel as my base. The Asia Hotel is ideal for visiting all areas of Bangkok.

So as I said, you do not live in Bangkok. I would bet most on this forum, who actually live in Thailand, visit Bangkok as much as you do. To have an intimate relationship with the city, I would think one would actually have to live there for a period of time. More than just a "visit."

what's wrong with your regular hotel the Nana, soi 4 , that has good transportation links i believe.
