Paying Homage to a 9+ year old Honda CRV

After considering and test driving all option in the SUV an pick up sector, there was nothing good enough to make me part with my money.

I was finding all sorts of reasons to buy, ground clearance being one thinking it would be handy for our plot in Khao Yai which we haven't visited in the last 2 years, other than to pay 9bht land tax! But then again, why would I when my CRV still looks this good after all this time.

Admittedly, I put new suspension on just over a year ago due to it perishing with not being driven during the time I owned the Pajero in 2010. It has been exposed to the elements in favor of the Pajero and Mazda 3 we had at the time, but it has never failed to start.

The interior is still clean and has only just reached that point of a well seated leather sofa, and the paintwork is still spot-on with no rust to be found anywhere. In fact, the only issue is a rubber bush on the anti-roll bar.

While my Pajero was extremely reliable, after 1 year the seats started to wear on the sides, and the interior rattled to buggery. When I test drove the latest offerings it was actually quite pleasant jumping back in the CRV. A rattle free one at that!

Regardless of all the infotainment which is now being installed, my standard CRV system sounds much better than our 2015 Accord. In comparison the Accord trim rattles to anything with some bass. Did I mention it required a complete new A/C system at 38K? Warranty covered fortunately. What is also interesting is when both cars are parked at home, it is always the CRV I jump into.

It may well be a hairdressers car, and some say the 2.0 is underpowered which I find odd coming from those who are considering a sluggish SUV who is impressed with the acceleration because the turbo lag caught them by surprise.

My standard 2.0 CRV will blast most Pickup and SUVs from the line, and it does it with comfort.

Hasn't been waxed in 2 years.

All Hail the Comfortable Recreation Vehicle!

    So hows your car looking?

Not bad. I am thinking of buying an older Honda, and you've swayed me towards these.

How many Ks has it done, JJ ?

I agree. The older CRV is comfortable, spacious, well equipped and capable. I wouldn't pick one for off road or agricultural use, but that is not what they are designed for.
Have you tried out the latest version JJ?

Only 82k so not many considering its age.

Only thing you need to check for other than usual stuff is the main engine mount.

Perfect vehicle for Thailand IMHO - in-between car and truck. Nice tall view of the road, easy to get in and out (unlike a low-slung Civic)... plenty of room/practical for taking your new TV back from Tesco, etc...

Find a dark, secluded Soi, one can even play hide the sausage in the back with your gik - if no short-time nookie hotels are in the vicinity..

looks in good nick. Lucky you have the black interior, rather than beige, as I feel the black looks much better. I would prefer the 2.4 as I hear the 2.0 is a slug.

I've got two - a silver 2000 and a silver 2005. Both look like new and run perfectly. Honda CRV is the best car I've ever owned - basic maintenance is just about all I've ever had to do.

I actually had a 2000 model which I traded in for the Pajero. Converted it to LPG and it was great. Haven't tried the 2016, waiting for the new 2017 model.

    Still waiting for my toy.

It isn't sluggish, not sure why folks say that. Certainly isn't if you compare it to an SUV.

Stick it in first and second and it moves. Seems a little quicker since I converted to E85.

Still might change my mind. Lots of reasons not to buy. Mainly my daughter as I'm more or less a full-time dad.

Been waiting 2 years for it and the reason I sold my Versys.

Was either new car which is mainly a school run vehicle or a bike. CRV is good for a while i think

I drove a new (then) 2012 ish CRV before I came back to NZ... wasn't mine - just had the use of it.

I think it was the 2.0 - it felt much slower than my Honda City.. then again, I was much younger then, so probably more of a boy racer than I am now.
Maybe I was expecting it to move it's arse quick smartly, like my little City.

Obviously, the CRV is a much heavier, bulkier mass to move.. hence it felt slow to me then. I reckon I would be 'OK' with it, being more 'mature' now 555

    *shut-up... I heard that...

...wonder if there is a big difference between the 2.4 vs the 2.0?

When we brought ours I very much wanted the 2.4 but was talked out of it by the dealer. Apparently the performance and resale differences are negligible.

^ That's not what I hear... I've read it's a huge difference (night and day).

I'll have to try them both to compare.. if you are right - and the difference is subtle, big coin to be saved buying the 2.0.
I suppose, you could always make up the difference in HP with an after-market chip, exhaust, filter, etc..

My Toyota Wish is only a 1.8 and it doesn't feel under-powered to me - so my driving habits have mellowed as I've gotten older.

^True, very little in the 2.4 and 2.0.
Mine is near as quick as a city of the mark. Use the gears properly and it shifts. Stick it in D it takes a moment to build the revs up.

You need to take stated performance figures with a grain of salt in my opinion.

Purely by way of example (I don't know what the actual numbers are) but let's say the 2.0 has a 0 - 100 km/h time of 10 sec and the 2.4 a 8.9 sec.

Those figures are arrived at under optimal test/track conditions in the first place and aren't exactly translatable to the real world in any event.

How many times do you actually need to leave from an intersection or other stop at full-throttle (or even try to for that matter) for instance.

    *Edit*

    Actually those guesses weren't too far off, apparently 9.7 - 11.9 for the 2.0 and 9.4 - 10.3 for the 2.4.

    There's also a 1.8 diesel option that I wasn't aware of (10.8).
