    HELMET in Thailand

Is it true motor cycle helmets available in Thailand are very small and difficult
to find one to fit westerners ? Iv'e looked at plenty over the years but never
    tried them for size,
Why I ask is when I return, rather than take the risk of not getting what I want,
    purchase a helmet in Australia.

Best idea is don't ride motor cycles in Thailand then you wouldn't need the helmet.

Buy it in Aus. You'll save money and get it right.
Trust me, I've been through this more than once.

Thai motorcycle helmets offer as much protection as a water ballon, ill fitting or not. You'd be better off hollowing out a pumpkin and wearing that.

Buy one you like, and that fits, in Oz and bring it with you.

I bought mine in Paddock, Bangkok. Because I know what make fits my head. Chose one from the range of colours they had , paid the money and left. Easy.

But as i said I knew I have a Shoei head.

I bought a top of the line helmet in the US to bring to Thailand with me. Sold it when I left six years later for slightly more than what I paid for it new in the US.

You can buy all the top names, Shoei, Nolan, Arai etc at several shops in Chiang Mai. I'm sure it would be the same in Bangkok and a lot of other big cities in the country.

If you are anything like Socal, (young and invulnerable) you won't need one as dammage would be minimal.
I got lucky and found a quality western helmet left in a bar. Perfect fit.

Depends how much you want to spend. Panda Rider Sell European and US made helmets. Euro ones are on par with the prices in the EU. Personally, if you're going to spend 10k plus buy it here. There are decent, honest shops around.

You can buy a Nexx X.R2 from panda for 15k. You can buy the same helmet for 12k at a discount specialist in the UK, or you can buy it for 550 US dollars in the US. Depends what you want and how much you want to spend.

Yep, definitely get one in oz before you come, here in Lao I can buy a helmet for about 200'000 kip which is fuk all, I would rather pony up for an oz or stateside made one, saw a nasty accident here today, usually see a couple of accidents a day but this one was particularly gruesome one. Brains and blood all over the place, traffic backed up for miles, probably won't sleep real good tonight, but a good reminder to wear one

I am inclined to agree with you, but my wife works almost every day and most times I stay back at MIL's doing what ever. The town Lat Yeo town centre is say 5 K's away, every time I want almost any thing, im'e stuck, the plan is to purchase a new Honda wave just for the short shopping runs etc, hence a helmet.

Given that you won't be travelling at high speed. Airflow and ventilation should be your primary concern.
I don't wish to sound condescending, and the "if you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet" not with standing, one can buy a nice flip-up helmet here in LOS called LS2 for about 2000 baht. Lots of PCX guys wear them. Where is another thing?.

If you have a very large head, then buy one before you come.

I wore one of these in Indonesia and I had a Wave. I was feeling nostalgic and it fitted. What can i say?

I used to stock shark helmets made in Thailand but European sizes, good ventilation, all in all a good lid at reasonable prices.

Buying it overseas and bringing it back is not as necessary as it once was depending on the brand. While for Shoei and Arai you can still find better deals in the U.S. and elsewhere, for Shark and HJC (and some others) the local prices are nearly on par. If your plan is to have it shipped, you may as well buy locally regardless of brand as you're sure to be nailed on import taxes (helmets rarely if ever make it through without being hit with a 30-40% customs charge).

If you're in Australia, though, you'll have a better selection and may as well buy it there- you won't lose anything by doing that.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

You shouldn't get hit bringing it in yourself- to be on the safe side remove any tags from it so it doesn't appear brand-new and you can claim it to be used, but I've brought in loads of gear over the years (including helmets) and never once had a problem.
