    Decisions Decisions, What To Buy.

At the start of August, We shall be visiting the UK for two or three months.
    We do this every year.

Whilst there we have the use of an old spare family car, that has served us well. It is economical, reliable and actually not that bad to drive, but it is plug ugly and the misses hates it. It is an old model Nissan Micra.

This time I am thinking of buying a cheap car to use on our trips to the UK.

My short list is down to the following three cars.

    1.

    DESCRIPTION
    PRICE DROP CAR MUST GO
    £2400

Audi TT 2000 Plate MUST SEE
Cleanest Audi TT for sale online

    GOOD POINTS
    125000 miles, mainly motorway
    Full black leather interior
    Air con
    Heated seats
    6 Speed Gearbox
    FULL AUDI SERVICE HISTORY
    Two cam belt changes
    MOT due in July
    Lots of original MOT certificates
Original Bose head unit and sound system
Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS); Central Locking; Passenger Air bag; Driver Air bag; Electric Windows; Cassette Player; AM/FM Stereo; Power-assisted Steering (PAS); Xenon headlights; Electric heated seats; Climate Control; Leather Seats; Alloy Wheels; Alarm; Immobiliser; Side Air bags; Electronic Stability Program (ESP)

The car is in immaculate condition inside and out, since I've had it it has been detailed every other month and valeted once a week

    BAD POINTS
Slight dented scratch on the bonnet from previous owners garage door (see pictures)
    THAT'S IT!!

This car belonged to my aunty, her late husband left it to her after owning the car for 8 years. After only using it to pop to the shop and come down the motorway to see family she decided she couldn't afford it so I happily bought it off her knowing how well it had been looked after.
After 3 months of owning this beautiful car I have found out my girlfriend is pregnant!
So regrettably this beautiful and completely unmodified car has to go

    £2400 Open to sensible offers
    FIRST TO SEE WILL BUY

this audi looks great, it might be expensive to insure, and any repairs will certainly be pricey, but it would be a keeper as these cars will certainly assume classic status in the not too distant future.

    now for the next one.

    2.

I really like these little Toyotas, they are good to drive, well equipped, reliable, and best of all there is no road tax to pay every year.
Probably a more sensible bet than the Audi.

and lastly, my favourite of them all.

    3.

This one would be like my pick up here, indestructible and wont need cleaning and mollycoddling like the Toyota and Audi, and I could probably figure out how to do simple repairs on it myself..... or teach the missus.

so, decisions decisions. what to do.

The MOT for the Audi is due in July. You are going in August. Will it pass have passed the MOT?

Seriously, as your wife seems to almost have a veto over the car you will drive, it's probably best to ask her which one she likes. It could save a lot of time and maybe money.

    Lol, hairdresser........

    Why buy anything?
Cars need to be driven, you can't expect it to last sitting idle 10 months a year, things corrode, seals dry out.
    Use the car they offer...

If your over 5 Foot tall you won't fit in the defender, plus when it breaks down the parts will come from India, then it will breakdown again. And again. The company I work for in Laos bought a fleet of the fuckers, worst 4wd I've ever used, might be alright for pottering about on the motorway but fockin useless in the terrain we deal with, They might of been ok back In the day but honestly they cannot compare to a Landcruiser . Lately the company have just gone with the Ford Ranger 3.2 6 cylinder, haven't had a go at them yet , should be interesting how they go, it's also wet season , just stick with the plug ugly micro if you only need a shopping trolley

I never driven a Rover but always had Cruisers since I was young, got a nice 1993 Prado back home it gets driven by my bro. Is it true that the Cruiser has always been superior and the only reason the army uses the Rover is coz of WWII - they didnt want to piss off soldiers by using Jap made vehicles.

The Rover may or may not be a decent 4x but it defo looks the part.

I had one of the first TTs, well, within 6 months of launch. It was great, 225bhp (look for twin exhaust to tell). For a sports car it could be very fuel efficient, mid 30s. It was also a good size boot with the back seats dropped, got a tumble drier in there once. For the first year nearly every time I returned to where it was parked there would be a couple of people standing looking at it. I kept it for over 5 years because I never saw anything which was more interesting. Finally replaced it with a Mazda RX8 (wankel rotary engine). This was great in the summer but the reverse opening rear doors were a gimmick, totally impractical on car parks, rear seats didn't fold and boot opening was too narrow to fit a large suitcase in, checking and topping up oil every month was a pain, and having to get the engine to full temperature before switching off was a nuisance.

Since I am a true car lover, the TT by all means. Your wife should enjoy the attention and as you said, it will start going the other way in price at some point, if taken care of.

Buy something off Autotrader with 6 months tax and test for 500 quids and sell it when you return to LOS.
Do you have no claims in your own name? If not forget the Audi and the Land Rover.

I haven't had insurance in my name the UK for seven or eight years now, so i will be starting from scratch again. Could be painful I know.
I'm a named driver on the Micra, but the car is not registered in my name.

    A cheap car to me means £500 - £2000.

I would never buy a new car, its financial madness.

I have been out of the insurance loop for over 5 years. Last year I bought a ten year old Ford Focus Auto 1.6l for 360 quid and insured it for 320 fully comp, based on my 40 years of driving experience.

I like those Defender 90's. But I'd recommend keeping the old Nissan, there's is much to be said for low key butt ugly cars (actually that Nissan don't look all that bad). especially one which you know to be reliable and economical, keep it until it ceases to serve you well.

Looks like a very disparate selection. Nice dream, but are you sure you've thought your wants and needs through?
I could understand if you bought them all....

^I'd say he's got it sorted, keep the Nissan and buy the 90.
