They don’t make me smile. In the early to mid-nineties I was a co-owner of a piling equipment sales and rental company. We had a handful of hammers doing jetty work in Laem Chabang and Ao Udom. From time to time I would leave Bangkok early in the morning and meet a Dutchman in Naklua where he would always insist on having a European breakfast at one of the smaller hotels on Naklua road.

From there we would travel together to the jobsite in Siracha or Laem Chabang. We had the option of taking a relatively new Toyota four door pick, or if I was driving it that day a 5 series BMW. He always insisted on taking his poxy Daihatsu Mira, which once he got onto Sukhumvit road, he would try to flat foot it all the to the jobsite. And he drove like a fucking madman all the way there.

Now to be fair, that 600cc engine can’t get a lot of speed up when there are two western expats in the car, but that didn’t stop him from trying. He would zip through traffic like he was playing a video game with inches to spare between a car in front and behind him. It used to annoy the shit out of me.

The most irritating thing was back then, they would frequently have police checkpoints in Sukhumvit road, either going to or from the jobsites. He would slow down for the officer stopping him, and then drive around him while giving a wave and giggling. That also annoyed the shit out of me.

So, no fond or smiley memories of Daihatsu Miras from me.

    From Wiki :-

"The Sprite quickly became affectionately known as the "frogeye" in the UK and the "bugeye" in the US, because its headlights were prominently mounted on top of the bonnet, inboard of the front wings".

Which is why I guessed you were a Septic.

I had a mate with one when I was a kid and he called it a bug-eye ... so I've always referred to it as same.

He wasn't a Yank so don't know why he called it as such.

Was also BRG ... great fun (back then) to ride in.

    What model ?

Belmont was a level of specification.
    as in "Not the Kingswood"

it certainly isn't a HQ as they had indicators in bumpers.

'75 would peg it as a HJ.

Belmont would be 173cu engine and drum brakes on the front.
