Motorbike thief in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai -100k reward

5 bikes so far for the 'affable and charming man' - building up his collection

Foreigner Takes off with Expensive Hire Bikes in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai
Reward given for Evidence Leading to his Capture
    Sep 23, 2013

CityNews – A foreign man, seen in the picture below, using fake passports and fake driver’s licenses has been hiring bikes in the north of Thailand and not returning them to the shop.

It’s been reported that so far the man has stolen from five shops.

    1. Mr Mechanic lost a Kawasaki 650 Ninja
    2. CP lost a Honda ER 6
    3. Mr Beer ER6
    4. Pop Honda 500F
    5. Chiang Rai Big Bike rentals lost a Honda 500F

Chiang Rai Big Bike will pay 100,000 baht as a reward for evidence that leads to the man’s arrest.

CityNews were informed that the man not only uses fake documents, but also seems very affable and charming. He pays for the rental, and in one case extended a week’s rental – for which he paid – but never returns with the bike.

    Hey, wow !
I wonder if he's run out of money and selling them over the border ? Or just a bit mental ? The fake PPs and licences would suggest the former.

I'm glad that this info has been shared here as Tonybkk and I have been made aware of this and would have posted this evening.

The guy has been using a fake Belgium passport

But the clothes he is wearing in the OP's pic have been identified as a Dutch football kit.

Let's hope the fucker gets caught and gets what he deserves, I doubt however he is still in Northern Thailand.

There is a thread running over on gt-rider with more info

Just out of curiosity, you think it's funny that these shops have been ripped off?

I've rented from Pop and Mr Mechanic and have heard only good things about the new rental company in Chiang Rai. These are honest shops, not scammers like the ones in Pattaya and Patong and they operate on pretty thin margins.
Hopefully their bikes are fully insured so that these thefts won't hurt them too much and hope they catch the thieving creep soon!

Even though all these Faranges look alike, I do not think the passport photo looks anything like the fat faced Bulldog mounted on wee bike. The passport looks like an Arab.

Who does look like their photos in passports? I look like a hardened criminal but in real life look damned handsome, dashing, debonair, suave etc. etc.

Speaking of getting ripped off, I rented an immaculate PCX 150 in Pattaya from motorbike station with free delivery and pickup for about 280thb a day. (nouvo was 125thb)
Photocopy of passport and 1000thb deposit was all that was required and there were no problems whatsoever when the bike was picked up, 1000thb returned.

In Chiang Mai the thieving mofo's were trying to extort 550thb for the same ride or 300thb for a clapped out nouvo PLUS they wouldn't accept anything but my original passport.
I went to at least 6 different shops and made about a dozen phone calls and all the same.

I just couldn't do it, about double the price or more = RIPOFF to me and my spidey sense said I would have all manner of trouble getting my passport back due to a number of problems that the bike suddenly had.

I've rented from Pop and Mr Mechanic and have heard only good things about the new rental company in Chiang Rai. These are honest shops, not scammers like the ones in Pattaya and Patong and they operate on pretty thin margins.
I call bullshit on the highlighted line going on the numbers quoted above.

Mind you, you might be right as the silly knuts seemed more than happy to have a pile of bikes sitting on the shop floor unrented and no income, likely because anyone with half a brain wasn't paying their ripoff prices.
If they charged a reasonable rate in line with the rest of Thailand and Asia they might find they had more bikes rented so more income being generated.
Surely its better to get 180thb a day for a pcx than 0.00thb which is what they were getting

Jaysus, tough man. Just because their prices were higher than rock bottom you reckon they deserve to get ripped off?

for the bike people -I don't know so I am asking
what do you think his cunning plan is?
someone suggested 'over the border' would there be 1. a market and 2. reasonable resale in either Laos or Myanmar?
what about re-selling them in Thailand? If as article says he has fake passport and drivers licenses, fake Green Books too or would that trip up with motor registration department?
or, would anyone buy a bike like this, almost new, without Green Book/registration papers?
5 bikes worth how much - 1.5m? resale through any of above I thought he'd be lucky to get 20-30% of that value?
    (joking)
how many more till he gets that 800k in the bank for a retirement visa?
like horse thieves in old western movies, will a motorcyle thief be lynched when caught?
    thanks

Maybe he's setting up his own rental business and he's trying to save on start-up costs.

The fact is that lax law-enforcement coupled with the willingness of locals and foreigners to buy stolen bike parts (or keep stolen bikes on the road with re-numbered frames and fake green books in the outer provinces with not much more to worry about than having to pay the occasional 200 baht bribe for riding a dodgy bike) make this an easy way to pick up some money.

This guy is obviously incredibly brazen, though.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

I'm sure with his face plastered over the internet it is only a matter of time until he gets caught...

I wouldn't be surprised if he were sending the bikes to Laos as the number of big bikes here is increasing very fast! All of which are illegal (250cc limit here) So no real problem (technically not morally) of riding a stolen bike around here as there's no record of it here and the police for some reason do not pull over big bikes at all!!!

I had my CBR250 stolen on Sep 27- so I am VERY sympathetic with the bike rental shop in Chiang Mai. 100k is serious money in Thailand, hope we have one less motocy thief...

A lot of bikes land up in China, routed through Laos. They cannot be legally registered there (importing a foreign-made bike is a pain in the arse) but as police hardly care about motorbikes in China lots of locals and foreigners ride them here.
