    Gasohol is shyte! With pictures!

Just returned to Thailand and could not start the KLX. Took it apart and this is the state of my carb after letting the bike sit for 3 months with gasohol in the float bowl:

Main jet is completely clogged with this nasty gasohol residue:

This residue is not only on the parts that were submerged in the gasohol. It's also inside the jets and on the needles. Obviously a complete rebuild is necessary.

Completely my fault of course- I shouldn't have used gasohol in the first place and I should have drained the carb before leaving the bike, but it is what it is, and perhaps this post might save others from having to deal with a similar mess.

    Happy Trails!

Looks like that fuel is 90% water.Did you have a few misfires whilst using it,think you will find that scale/water is the residue from the distillation process.

I never buy gasahol unless I absolutely have no choice, which happens sometimes. I'll make even more effort to avoid it now, thanks for sharing.

I have been hiring various different vehicles to get an idea of which I prefer before buying.

Thanks for this .. so it is either diesel or regular petrol for fuel.

I always take benzine, the yellow one at PTT stations. Many Shell garages don't have it at all for some reason.

I've sent these pics to my gf, she has promised no more gasahol in my absence so jobs a good'n

^ Thought benzine had finished? Benzine 95 or 91 and if available is it better to put that in my versys which spits and puffs on PTT but no so bad with caltex.

No 95 is back at many stations except maybe Shell. Just look for price signs in the 47 baht range. That will be it. Edit: today 46.95 Shell say they have it but if it is below 46.95 it will be V-Power 95 which still has alcohol.

If bike is late model FI then then it doesn't matter so much.

No 91 or 95 just 'benzine - yellow colour'

That's at PTT. Will try Caltex next time.

What to put in a Street Triple?

Any modern fuel injected engine will be fine on 91 or 95 gasohol depending on compression ratios, see manufactures recommendations, I use 95 gasohol in everything except my strimmer and chain saw, as NO 2 stroke will like it!

    At least it is green.

should be good for the environment...apparently. I only use green things now.

    & where's that thread then???

Get a Honda City in orange, it won't let you down. I know it's a car, but, the Honda is noticeably different on the various fuels. Best of all on benzene, but the Shell v-power was next best, and we usually use that.

Get a Honda City in orange,
At 6' 4" I barely fit in a Honda City. I've had a Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, various Fortuners diesel and gasohol, and an Altis. Anyway orange isn't environmentally friendly and surely it has to be green nowadays.

OK I'll do a thread sometime. Was meaning to do one on the return trip to Phuket from Bankok in a Fortuner but came close to strangling my passengers and wasn't in the mood.

At risk of accusations of thread hijacking, the simple pros and cons.

I prefer the Camry BUT with so many idiots having tinted glass you can't see through cars in order to determine what is happening ahead. I am used to adjusting my driving according to what the two or three vehicles in front of me are doing. A Fortuner or any other SUV is safer to drive as I can see over the looneytunes who are all driving around blind as bats.

NO WAY do I want any tinted glass and NO WAY do I want my safety impaired because I am stuck behind someone who would rather look cool than live. So an SUV it probably is....reluctantly. Haven't tried the Pajero yet... and there's a story in that too.

Much better! Ended up mixing up a batch of carb cleaner because for the life of me I can't find a shop in Bangkok that sells the stuff in anything larger than spray cans... So, consulting the interwebs I found a few different recipes and ended up making the following:

1 part gasoline, 1 part diesel, 1 part kerosene and 1 part Dichloromethane (I really wanted acetone but couldn't find it).

Even though I mixed it up outside in a well ventilated spot the fumes got me higher than a kite! Left the carb to soak overnight and scrubbed it clean this morning.

    After:

Moral of the story, avoid gasohol and drain your carb if you're not going to ride for a while to save yourself this hassle!

    Happy Trails!

And you'll get more chance to try out different fuels with a Honda as they're so uneconomical.

I thought about changing to the Civic, went to the showroom and played around; the City had more room in the front, more room in the back, and more room in the boot... New Civic is a big letdown.

    Sorry OP.
