Honda X4 - Yay or Nae?

So there is one for sale in my area, silver and mint condition for 175k with book etc.

They have been dubbed the Honda V-MAX as this was Honda's answer to the Yamaha.

I've read some reviews but most appear to be biased to their owners.

    It has a CB1300 engine.

Anyone had a go of one? Can it turn a corner and, most importantly, will it make it to the next petrol station?

I've never seen one in the flesh.

Is it fast? At 100hp@250kg it's not going to set any records, but it can get out of its own way (it was built to compete with the Japan-spec version of the VMax, not the export version).

With a 65" wheelbase, it won't handle like a sportbike, but it's probably not bad for a cruiser.

Do you know the model year? The mileage?

For 175K in LOS you most likely can't go too wrong (someone will buy it from you if you don't like it)- I'd offer less and hopefully get it for ~150K.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Looks ok, it's fast, comfy, cheap and reliable.

    What's not to like?

As long as the book is legit, have a close look at that. What province is it rego'd in?

Just waiting for an email reply on the year, I'm in Korea right now. After I get the year I can find out mpg but I think it's gonna be rough. More important for me is miles per tank.

The guy is a reputable dealer, a few friends have bought bikes from him and they've all been good. I imagine the rego will be songkhla province, don't think I'd consider it otherwise. Will check it out.

I'd be keen to hear from somebody who has rode one.

It was a Japan-only model that saw a small number exported (from what I read)- there probably won't be too many people on TD who have ridden (or seen) one.

It looks like it was cobbled together from bits left over on the factory floor.

Oh come on MTD, you don't need to preach Magnas to me.

The 1100 magna was the first production bike to do a 1/4 mile in undrr 10 seconds driven by Peewee. 1983.

    Honda X4 was '97 to '03

Is there such a thing as a "reputable dealer" in Thailand, or anywhere for that matter? It is a nice bike and as already said, make a lower offer and see what happens. In my experience, Thais have terrible negotiating skills, if they have them at all. You may want to ride it before giving any money (self explanatory).

A friend bought a Fireblade off him and previously a GSXR1000. No problems and he even delivered both bikes and left them with him while he transferred cash from UK.

However, The X4 will be sold by the time I get back from this project so need to consider other options.

    Another thread coming up...

A mate has a Honda X 11 which he is thinking of selling as he hardly uses it. I believe it is the naked Blackbird. A nice looking bike which has just had a load of cash spent on it. With a book and all it needs is a pair of tyres. he has left the new tyres as he says that whoever buys it can put the trye of their choice on as he prefers different tyres on different bikes. he is looking at around the 190 mark and will knock off the price of a pair of new tryes of choice.
I have ridden it a few times and it is very quick. You can throw it around the bends and yet you are not in that pocket rocket riding position that I don't like.

I was sold on the picture (not what I expected) until I read the review.

I broke my wrist a while back in a snowboarding epic fuck up (chopper lifter off the Alps) and the tip of my little finger is still numb after a 36k mountain biking race 3 weeks ago. 2hrs 17mins and nearly killed me!

Also, 'just had a load of cash spent on it' generally translates to me as 'needed loads of cash spent on it' or 'cutting my looses and getting rid'.

Where is the bike Big Fella?

    Thanks for sharing.

The bike is on Samui. The cash spent were on the likes of new fuel control unit, fully synthetic oil and quality filter, new K and N air filters, new quality chain and sprockets etc. As he said. Tyre choice is personal to each biker. He planned to do loads of off island trips but his business has kept him on the island so it hardly ever gets used. I last gave it a blast up to Chumphon. A very enjoyable trip. It will make someone a nice ride for the money

I'm not feeling it mate, sorry. Although I may use it as an excuse to zip up to Samui for a few days and visit the old haunts!

    Cheers.
