    Mazda CX5

    Coming in October.

Mazda to launch SUV in October | Bangkok Post: business

Very interesting car for me, it has taken the mid SUV market by storm. Unique diesel technology (skyactiv) gives big power and fuel economy. 175 hp/420nm from the 2.2 litre!

Not sold on the looks though, typical Mazda.

Because of the low compression it uses lightweight components and can rev like a petrol engine.

I'm finding these newer midsized-hybrid SUVs to be more attractive than the standard SUV offerings.....

Yeah, they make more sense to me, I'm more interested in cabin safety and comfort than 4wd capability.

The interesting thing is Mazda is taking these diesels to a new level of technology and forgoing hybrid drive trains which are too expensive while offering similar economy.

Will it be made here? Will it have a manual version?

I do like the red. The black looks Toyota-dull.

^ I didn't ask anything about where to find a 7 year old tattoo artist, so why did you bother replying?

I think it is made in Malaysia. Don't know if that means more import duty or what? ASEAN country? No idea if there will be a manual, probably not as it is competing with Captiva and CRVs. Good there will be more choice in that segment, it is sorely lacking and these mid SUVs are very popular in other countries.

Any wisdom regarding the comparisons of SUVs and the mid-models of vans that are available....

Not really sure which vans you mean but you will never have the same handling, nvh, ground clearance, AWD and spec level of an SUV in a van. Do you need more than 7 seats?

Also imported luxury vans are under pressure right now from the customs thieves.

That's the crux * multi-seated vehicles that are usual in some regard but not practical overall.

As mentioned in another OP.....we're studying/considering a Honda Freed.
    Still not sold on it.

I believe a SUV-similar vehicle would be much more practical, even if they might be a tad more expensive.

I hope they manage to get the CX5 for a little bit less than the CX9 (3,690,000 Baht!!)

CX5 looks smarter than the Captiva IMO
Hope the prices are kept reasonable. 1.6 / 1.7 mn baht for an oil burner is a tad high for me to stomach.
1.5mn baht and under would be good for a top spec diesel driven CX 5.

Yeah, 1.6/1.7 is a little high if it is going up against the CRV/Captiva. It is a class above both those vehicles though and if they are sourced from Malaysia not sure if there is duty in there as well. If it gets full duty like the CX9 I will be disappointed.

I think an SUV is much more practical than a Freed. It'll handle whatever the roads here throw at you better as well as flood waters.

Careful when you think of flood waters.
I believe the Captiva air intake inlet is mounted very low in the front bumper. Thus water will just cut off air supply when the going gets a little too deep.

For the petrol versions, not sure about the diesels.

I wouldn't think any soft roader is good in flood waters, just the extra ground clearance helps.

Sorry to go off subject but is the Hyundai Santa Fe Available in Thailand and if so how much is it?

They are quite popular in Laos and not a bad price ($45,000 USD) 2.2 CRDI Engine, 200bhp, auto and manual available and very safe as well!

Price list circulated at work (for employees to purchase, we usually get them a bit cheaper than R.R.P)
has the top of the range listed Bt.1750,000 but it does say this price is estimated but I doubt it will be much less than that if at all.

will this be the same power plant as the 2.2 Ford? Does look nice though. Not sure I'd buy another mazda after the flimsy Mazda 3 we have!

I took the Subaru XV for a test drive yesterday. It was pretty gutless as confirmed by reviewers but I had just stepped out of my 3 litre turbo diesel so your gonna notice the lack of torque.

Unfortunately, like a lot of new cars, they are geared towards maximising economy over power.

I really liked it, well put together and has everything I want. Good AWD system and ground clearance means it will get most places a 4wd will.

I might go for another spin. Subaru are looking at ramping up their presence in Thailand.

If it wasn't so gutless I would be seriously considering it. Still, it's the same engine as in the impreza, I'm sure there will be some performance enhancements for it soon. I liked the look of the engine when I popped the hood, very easy to work on if you want.

I think being a CVT it seems less powerful as the revs are constant, you don't get the build up of revs and feel the next gear. Definitely need to take one for a longer spin, I always liked subarus and it's a nicely built car with good reliability.

They are selling a lot worldwide, it has been quite a success for Subaru, just the lack of power is the downside but being 2.0 litre anything larger falls into a bigger tax bracket and I am keen on good economy in my next car. The turbo diesel version would be perfect but no chance of getting that here.

The 2014 model is a hybrid with the same engine so there is little hope of a more powerful model coming out, the deal now is making economical cars.

The CX5 diesel would be great with 420nm of torque but I think it will be too expensive at 1.7 plus.....

No. The CX5 has the Skyactive engine.
