    Target Fixation

It's one of those motorcycling habits that's difficult to break- looking where you want to go instead of looking where you're going is counter-intuitive, like avoiding the brakes (not referring to 'trail-braking' here so don't jump on me) and applying throttle and lean-angle through a turn.

This guy gets it very, very wrong:

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Its a real problem amongst the new gen of bikes rediscovering their youth, or taking up biking at a senior age.

Or getting o a Harley as a senior. they have the money and it seems like a bit of freedom in their last fling.

Unless you got over crotch horsepower in your youth, the Harley is on every aging redneck's bucket list.

Everything is wrong with when it come to the geometry, an accident waiting to happen. Apart from cruzing round town and doing the potato potato potato at stoplights, they fail.

The Dick on the Motor Bike needs to learn to ride. He's lucky he hit the back of a push bike rider and not a truck...not so lucky for push bike Guy. Lucky to walk away from that.

Looks like the cyclist might have a sore arse.

At 3-4 seconds the motorbike twitched. Looked like he was going too slow to lean that much to me.

Almost something out of Jackass movie "Biker bowling" he's had to slow down to line up the last 2 pins for the spare! and he's dressed up like a big black bowling ball

    That's what brakes are for.

But if I recall its that same dodgy bit of the road where all the stacks happen. So e weird camber change has put him off and then he looked himself right into them.

It's always fun seeing your bike roll down the road ahead of you- I had the pleasure of watching my Hayabusa roll about 25m after a massive high-side- luckily there was a ditch for it to drop into or it might still be going...

Of course, that happened in a hairpin famous for collecting bikes (the ditch was littered with broken parts) and I didn't take anyone out in the process- the guy in the vid had no business on that road- he panicked and straightened up and plowed into those poor guys in a low-speed, simple situation.

The dick on tha motor cycle saw the riders and stood the bike up, he was going super slow, had he kept doing what he was doing he would have missed em by a mile.
As firerysteve said, he should learn how to ride, and its got nothing to do with Harley's.

Avoiding target fixation requires practice and experience. I don't believe there's any magic short cut. Things can get ugly fast when people ride beyond their limits and a public road is no place to race.

Target fixation is a simple concept that applies to many sports- look where you want to go, and you will go where you look. Simple concept, but if you have a tendency to target fixate, it's not always an easy habit to break.

The problem with Mulholland is that it attracts a lot of noobs and wanna be's and poser who want to show off for the camera... So many people get in over their head and rnickeymouse makes a living taping all their fuck ups.

Some more great Mullholland crash compilations-

Beware, you can easily waste hours watching rnickeymouse's vids

The rule of thumb is; "see and avoid", the accident in the video to me is inexplicable, other than the motor rider had his eyes closed for some incomprehensible reason, he should never get on a bike again. That was more than a simple brain fart. Lucky the bicyclist wasn't killed or permanently maimed.

I think perhaps you are not familiar with target fixation?

    Defined:

Target fixation is a process by which the brain is focused so intently on an observed object that awareness of other obstacles or hazards can diminish. Also, in an avoidance scenario, the observer can become so fixated on the target that they will forget to take the necessary action to avoid it, thus colliding with the object.
This is a common issue for motorcyclists and mountain bikers. A motorcycle or bicycle will tend to go where the rider is looking; if the rider is overly focused on an obstacle, the cycle can collide with that object simply because of the rider's focus on it, even though the rider is ostensibly trying to avoid it.
The term target fixation was used in World War II fighter-bomber pilot training to describe pilots flying into targets during a strafing or bombing run.[1]

Target fixation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My very first time on a road bike as a teenager, first corner I came too, I came in a bit hot, stared right at the curb that I didn't want to hit, so of course I hit the curb.

I guess as a skier I learned how to ski through trees by looking through the trees. If looked at any single tree you'd hit it.
As pilot you learn something similar I guess to land correctly.

But that video shows a wide open road with tons of space, he wasn't splitting lanes in bkk traffic! The moto wasn't even going very fast and the bicycles were riding in a steady predictable manner.
It's still inexplicable to me. Target fixation maybe, but it's more like his brain disappeared or exploded!

As Tony mentioned, that's a nasty spot on Mulholland if you're not used to it (at speed it's tricky even if you've ridden it before)- still, it's not that bad.

Obviously (at least hopefully) this was a new rider who just didn't understand the physics of motorcycles and the cyclists paid the price- it was really ugly, and he fact he was going so slow shows he panicked as it was so easily avoidable.

Many riders on this board that have ridden all of their lives, can't help but laugh/cringe when you see something like this, the guy was so far out of his depth on a motorcycle
In fact you see them in Thailand a lot, on bikes like Supper size scooters and CBR 250s as well as ER6 and Ninja
