So why have this installed ?

Ive been looking at a Thai forum for owners of the car my girlfriend is getting , Ive seen several shots of this - ( Red bar thing )

    White Bar

So why would you have this fitted to your vehicle , what's it for and what does it do ?

Strut brace. As has already been mentioned it's to improve ridigidty and aid handling. Cheap and effective too, although generally more for performance cars.

So would having one of these ''Red '' bars fitted be worth the cost involved , would the difference / handling, really justify the installation cost to a normal every day driver ?

Years ago I had a Mk II Escort with an angry twin weber'd 2.0 in it, was purely a streeter but the difference a strut bar made to the handling was unbelievable. bang for buck it was the best improvement I made to that awesome little car.

Not sure how much they are here to be honest. I do know they're cheap back home (circa $50) so imagine they're the same or less here. It certainly couldn't hurt to have one on an everyday driver because it can only aid handling not take away from it, however they really only come into their own in reducing body-flex which is usually under harder driving/cornering conditions.

Yeah on a mdern day front drive thing they prolly make fuck all difference, the Escort's body was like a stick of licorice hence it enjoyed some aid in the stiff dept, had to go up 3mm in diameter on the rear roll bar as well.

Awesome cars, I bought a 2 door RS replica ages ago with a blown clutch and towed in back to queensland, got speaking with the president of the RS owners club and he ran the numbers and turns out it was a 100% real deal RS2000 and not a replica. Cha Ching, bought for $300.00 and sold for $5000.00 2 weeks later !!!

As has been said it's a strut brace, waste of money unless you've other mods such as lowered suspension and poly bushes etc... And you are driving flat out.

Yes but not under normal driving conditions. If the car is not used in competition it has no useful purpose at all.

Called a strut brace. Been around since the introduction of McPherson struts.

It will only improve the handling if you intend on driving around corners like a rally driver or chav boy racer. Otherwise don't waste your time.

thais install these gadgets for one reason only.

    they look pretty.

i'm surprised they dont install them on the outside of the bodywork so everyone can see them and comment how pretty they are.

its probably just painted plastic pipe.

I disagree - even under normal driving conditions anything that reduces flex in the body is going to aid handling to at least some degree. Whether or not that's sufficient, or even noticeable, enough to justify the time/expense of having one installed is just a matter of preference though I suppose.
