When the RPMs peek does it pop either through the exhaust or the throttle body (what would be the carburetor on an older model)? If so the timing belt was loose and skipped a tooth in the cam drive.

How many people know what a throttle body is?

I had that problem once on a motorcycle and it was a blocked muffler.

Could be some adverse effect from removing the converter. Perhaps a fuel mixture irregularity. Put your finger into the tip of the exhaust pipe and rub the inside wall. Is it black and sooty or brown and dry?

check the manifold, in Thai it's something like; tor ( stress the "r" )

it gave me hell last year until a roadside mechanic told me what the problem was ( that was after changing lots of things )

Tor means pipe so you will need to point at it as well

I saw one outside a rival dealer today. Had to laugh. Got to be the gayest looking car on the roads nowadays.

    ^^^^

I was told to go to an exhaust shop and say "tor sia" ( sia with a stress "a" ). To prove he was right, he took a piece of wire went under the car and when he came out, I tested the car and all was well, so I gave him a hundred baht, went to an exhaust shop and had it fixed for another hundred baht ( no welding, a bolt replaced ).

Had a re-occurance after a few weeks, so went back and was told I needed to replace the gasket, or have it permanently welded by adding an exhaust flexible tube. I chose the flex tube, and I've been happy.

Could be the Nissan ECU limp home rev limit is being reached. A code check is the worth doing. A Nissan dealer in Melbourne (or even any decent mechanic, MIDAS etc) should be able to plug into the ODBII and check for code if you don't have your own reader and free software.

If you google nissan ecu 3000 rpm limit (or something similar) - you'll see 2000-3000 is a common Nissan limit if the ECU has thrown a code.

Even my new LED lights for the Cube had a special resistor for this issue "Has loading circuit so no ECU 3000rpm limit concern". Who would have thought swapping your tail lights could cause the ECU to go to limp home mode

    cheers
