In the first video, its nothing to do with flipping the car over. Its to get a compact 4 wheel drive and prevent torque steer at the end of a 1/4 mile run when you lift off the loud pedal.

Just think about it, modern dragsters have over 6,000 bhp, and yet they don't flip over while waiting to do a run.

Even worse would be the 27 litre engined Spitfires and Hurricanes of WW", which had unbelievable torque. Dont see many of those flipped over at the start of the runway...........

Sorry, Group Captain, can't head for Germany, my Spitfires just flipped over and ripped the port wing off.

As you note you will be driving it like Grand Ma & no thinking to give it a kick in the guts.
, torque is the twisting force the engine applies to the crankshaft.
Now we are talking about multi engines & the twist power of each engine.

This forces the nose of the rear axle upward. As the car begins to accelerate, the torque leverages the front of the car upward, causing weight transfer to the rear. As viewed from the rear of the car, engine torque twists the body clockwise, lifting the left front and compressing the right rear (passenger-side) spring. As the pinion continues to apply this massive torque through the ring gear, the rear axlehousing is also being leveraged in a counterclockwise direction as viewed from the rear--lifting the right (passenger) side of the axlehousing while planting the left. As the car accelerates, it appears to be planting the right rear tire when in fact axle torque motion is unloading the tire, reducing traction. That is why a car equipped with an open differential will spin the right rear tire even under light acceleration.

Got any pictures of cars flipping from too much torque?

I've seen drag cars lift the front end on take off and you can see the torque twisting the chassis but never one flip. Which way would it flip? Sideways or end over end?

It would be hilarious to see a car flip on take off due to massive torque.

Sorry Hensen I like the idea with 3 X 3500

Lets look at a drag cars it has big horse power with 1 engine.
So it has 1 engine trying to twist the car.

But Hensen will be using 3 engines & would be 3 time the torque.
Now he has a V24 but the are only link flywheel to the front pulley.
What is stopping the first engine from twisting, then the second engine doing the same.
If you lift 1 corner of you Chassis would it twist or not
I no that you will be using it for show, but would not take as the engine centre of gravity is very high.

Sorry Ratch, but i think Henson has taken the "twisting" of the frame into consideration so shouldn't be a worry to him. I think the motor set is grand, I want to see the body to go with the motor.

Even though there is 3 engines I doubt very much the total is making anything more than 500 to 600hp.

600hp is considered a daily driver these days.

    About 450bhp at full chat.

What a great workshop you have Henson. I'm drooling as I type.

Maybe you should open a school instructing Thai woman about the importance of about everything having a place and everything being there.

    Absolutely great thread mate.

Thanks, I built the place in 1983. When stuff is not tidy or clean, I just cant get the enthusiasm to work. Gotta keep sweeping up, and having cups of tea.

Engine to engine transmission with one "V" belt...and all engines in series? Will look great, and may sound awesome with several V8's running slightly out of synch ....but if I am correct ...you may need lots of spare "V" belts! Great hobby, and may well be a "chick magnet"!

My apologies.....I looked a bit harder, and looks like power transmission is direct connected crankshafts...so all the motors should be running synchronously, and theoretically could be tuned in synch. The transmission on the back end is certainly going to see torque! So you will probably only need a change of undies when you open the throttle!

Not to worry. With those rear tires, he won't get far off the mark.

    Building a car in Thailand

Good luck, Hansen. The following info. may be of use to you : I imported a Marlin Berlinetta on an RAC 6 month carnet in 1994 shipping it in container to Port Klang, then driving it to Hat Yai myself (loads of stops by the BIB who only wanted to gaze at the car !). The idea was to produce ,in collaboration with my Thai friends, a similar car to sell at a very reasonable price. Everyone was very enthusiastic and the car even got pictures in Bangkok Post. Likewise, we lined up component suppliers such as for the fibreglass body parts and the tubular chassis. Then came the bombshell. Registration for road use was only possible if the original chassis of a Thai-regd. car was used. So our project for small-scale manufacture was stuffed. No way round the regs.
I had a great time driving the car in Bkk and Pattaya but efforts to extend the stay were stymied at every turn. The "authorised person" was never available in Customs at Klong Tuey - i was given a right run-around and BS. Even my influential Thai friends could do nothing. Then suddenly, after 5 months I was issued an ultimatum to re-export the car via Malaysia(impossible) within 5 days or pay a penalty of roughly £21,000. I nearly had heart failure. The situation was saved by my Chinese-Thai friend, a business-man, who arranged shipment in time via KlogTuey.
So that was it. I have some nice photos and it was an adventure but the whole concept scuppered by red tape.
Back in UK I sold the Merlin - now with a/c but no heater ! - and my Thai friends helped with expenses.
Hope this was interesting reading for you. I had a lot of "face" in Soi Nana for a while and the boys (and girls !) loved the Marlin.

Welcome to the forum, but as you can see by now, you better wear your nomex.

If you are building a car from scratch to bring to Thailand, it will probably cost you a lot more than you budgeted. Actually you might not even be able to bring it in.

Still, if I were you I would go ahead and put the steering on the right so you can drive on the left.

Also, the roads in Thailand are pretty crowded if you are really into speed (but I guess you know that since you have been to Thailand a few times).

    Chok Dee,

    RickThai

What about recent news that a proposed law to start driving on right will go into effect January 1, 2014.

They plan a restriction on reselling that says a car must be converted to left-hand drive before it can be sold.

Never heard about that in the UK. Are they really thinking of changing lanes ??

I can't believe it took two months for me to find out it was an April Fools joke. I was feeling serious pressure over finishing two project cars before the Jan 1st deadline! I rarely read the comments on an article, and apparently the mods were deleting those early posts that called it as an April Fools joke. Well, thanks for letting me know. Better late than never, and it takes a big load off my mind over my two cars!

At last, the interior for the Daimler is taking shape. Still gotta do wood cappings etc. but at least I am no longer looking at acres of aluminium panels.........
