SUV's - Choices at the moment. Or wait?

I've been thinking of getting an SUV. I haven't used my pick up as a pick up for ages. want a higher level of refinement. I know some new models are on the way ie: Everest and Fortuner.

I have 2 cars (2005 Vigo and 2011 Fiesta - I have the Fiesta on the market already) that I want to sell which should get me around 1 mill. I only want one new car.

I keep thinking it will be best to hang out for the Everest but no idea when it will be available. Some pundits are saying next year, some 2014 I reckon you won't see any new style Vigo/Fortuner until 2014 as it was introduced in 2004 and they have a 10 year model life. Although Toyota are getting their arses kicked by the Ranger and you would think they would hurry up a bit.

    I don't think I want to wait until 2014....

I must say, I am loyal to Toyota, my Vigo has been utterly reliable and an awesome pick up. It only has 140k klm's on it so has a lot of life left in it.

Given the success of the Ranger I expect the Everest to be very good.

I like the fact they are not as long as the pickups so a bit easier to park and I want a smother ride than the pick ups give with their leaf spring rear suspensions. Also, I am looking forward to a higher level of refinement.

    So.....

Fortuner. Is kind of out of the picture as it is really dated now. I expect the new ones to be good though but not until 2014. I really like the top Sportivo though with it's better handling but at 1.5 mill it's a lot especially once the new ones are around and you are left with an old body style.

Everest. Is probably the one to wait for but how long? I expect more airbags, 6 speed, good audio etc

Pajero Sport. I hadn't considered these as I still have the hate on for mitsubishi but these are really quite good for the money. I read there is a new update coming, revealed at the motor show running now. Minor things. The sales girl was quick to offer free upgrades etc along with being a real cutie...I will have to be careful I don't end up buying one just to get into her pants....I'm definately going back there again! I like the 2.5 diesel as it has about the same power as my Vigo. Fuel consumption is one of the big considerations for me although the new 3 litre v6 would be nice but expect worse fuel economy. I did see a sign saying it could run on e85 which is only 22 baht/litre and gas also an option. I would welcome the extra power though but I like the low down torque of a turbo diesel. It's a shame they don't offer the 3.2 diesel any more. You can alway chip the 2.5 if it feels under powered. I like the fact it has paddle shifters. The looks are growing on me and I like the size. One thing with the Ranger is it is just too big. The Everest will have a shorter wheel base but sitll so big? Is there a size war looming? Will Toyota "up" the size of the new Vigo to compete?

I am only interested in 2wd. My Vigo is 4wd and considering how many times I used it (a lot of those times I could have left it in 2wd anyway) it's not worth it for me.

I should probably hang onto my Vigo and go for the Everest next year but you know what it is like, you go into show rooms and soon you are thinking about driving a new car....What if it is 2014? The 3.2 sounds nice even though the 2.2 would be enough for a sensible person.

I expect the newer ones will offer more refinements and bells and whistles. I am keen on having something with a full suite of airbags, 2 is just bullshit in this day and age.

The Pajero offers a lot for 1.2 mill and is available now. The Everest may offer more (esp. more airbags) will probably cost more (1.4-1.5 mill?) and no word yet when it may be available. When it does become available how long a wait until they can deliver? Not a good track record by Ford there....

The new Toyotas? 2014? Late 2014? thats a long way out. No idea on styling but they have some catching up to do. They will definately have to be 5 star NCAAP safety rated as the mining companies are demanding it. The new Fortuner will be as good as the Everest in all regards.

    Anyway, just thinking out loud

    Any thoughts?

No. I suspect a reasonable used one will still be over priced due to the high tax paid on initial purchase.

    Parts, service....

    V8 petrol engines....

    No good to me.

Ford Escape and Honda CRV are the only other options with easy spares then

My wife wants to trade in her top-of-the-line 2010 Pajero Sport for the new 2013 4-banger 4x4 turbo edition as it has better interior refinement and an improved ride (though I quite like the one we currently have- her dad will pay for the upgrade as a New Year's gift for her, so I really don't care either way as it won't cost me anything)- with a couple accessories it will be over 1.4mil minus the trade-in value of the 2010 edition.

I've driven several Fortuners and the Mitsubishi is better overall in my opinion.

I wouldn't get anything but the Sport model- she had a base model as a rental for a couple of weeks when hers was being repaired after being rear-ended, and it was like a tin can in comparison, and felt very cheap- the Sport is far superior.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Problem? He's buying new cars for his other two children, and he wants to buy my wife one as well- since her car is fairly new, she will probably just trade it in- should I say, 'No- he can't do that'? If he wants to pay 400K-600K or whatever it will cost, he can go ahead if it makes them both happy.

I bought her the Pajero she has now if it makes you feel any better, and she has enough of her own money to buy something better if she wants- spare me your judgment, please.

The Everest and the Forskinner are 'pickups' with cart springs and the lack of refinement that they bring. Just a different body.

If you're not in any hurry the Ford Kuga/Escape is the pick of the bunch. When that is due to arrive, God only knows.

    In orange of course!

I think I would prefer the full size Everest/Fortuner/Pajero.

Even tough it is only 3 of us at the moment I like to have the room if needed, probably never use 7 seats but It could come in handy a couple of times a year.

I like the torque of a turbo diesel and the new engines are good on fuel.

The rear suspension are all coil springs but still a little primitive, have to compromise somewhere.

That Kuga could be nice but possibly too small.

The 6th and 7th seats are really only suitable for children or very small adults- one large person can squeeze into both of them if necessary, though.

Anyway, I think I would be crazy not to wait for the new Everest, it will probably be the best one unless I wait until 2014 for the new Vigo/Fortuner.

So do I. I walked past a new one today and they look great. Nice interior too and a good size.

Just wish it was a Toyota or Honda.

It does look nice, but a Daewoo doesn't have quite the same ring to it, does it?

I just read a post by a guy in the know that the new Everest is due Q4 or Q1 2013....

If that is the case you would think there was some news about it? Or some spy shots?

Definately have to wait on spec / price first but I must say the Pajero is looking tempting. There was supposed to be an update released at some motor show running right now? Any news?

It looks like a Fortuner with a Pajero step-in rail.

I did see that before, it states:

Seemingly accurate renderings of the next-generation Ford Everest have hit the Internet on the back of leaked information surrounding the engine and model line-up earmarked for the Fortuner-rivalling pickup-based SUV.
According to a report posted by Australian motoring website goauto Ford had leaked, and then hastily covered up, information surrounding the next-generation Everest on the company’s consumer resource website.

If true it would suit me given the size. Looks awfully a lot like the Fortuner like that. Given the Rangers spec it could beat it though - 6 speed, 3.2 diesel etc. I hope it has full airbags and it should be a bit up market compared to the Ranger which is already nice.

I'm hoping for Q1. If that is the case it could be announced at the 2013 bkk motor show in march.

They've changed the shape of the rear-most side windows which give it that Fortuner look. Luckily, unlike the Fortuner, you don't have to be a kunt to own it.

I don't reckon it will end up looking like that, too similar.

I like the pajeros look of all glass down the sides, much thinner c pillar.
