    Caught by speed camera

The missus walked in with a face like a slapped arse a couple of days ago due to the fact she had just recieved a picture through the post showing her car speeding along at about 160k's ( I know, driving like a kunt blah blah blah).
Unfortunately it was on the day that I used the car to pick the oldies up from the airport so I guess it was me.

The wifey says it is a 500 baht fine but what's got her goat up is that she reckons that if she/the car gets caught 3 times the police come to the house and take her licence, is this true?

I said to her to say I was driving so as to keep the peace. She reckons (guessing methinx) that you can't do this in Thailand.
This has to be bollox right? In a country where the cars are insured for any driver you must be able to pass the buck, mustn't you?
I would post pictures but life's too short.

I've lost count the number of times I've been caught on camera.
    No visits from the Police.
But if you get caught like one after the other. The fine doubles. ie. first fine 500 baht, next one 1,000 baht.

don't know about passing the buck between drivers but you do get a % cut from your licence if the offence goes on record. I don't know for speeding but i think it was something like 40% cut for a red light.

where on the No 7 was it? I've seen the signs and on the No9 but didn't think there was a camera.
will not put up wiv the "Nanny state" so don't push it on me.

I haven't seen the pic myself yet but a friend of mine had one taken between the 1st toll and the services a while back heading toward Swampy.

The worst thing is I invested 3k in a Cobra radar detector but lent it to a mate, DUH !

There are license plate covers you can order (they are illegal, of course, but it's unlikely to be a problem in LOS) that will reflect the light in such a way that the camera cannot get a clear shot- it's a good idea if you have a heavy foot.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

it depends on the pic and your looks...

you can first try to pass the buck, and if it fails later apologize and say you must have gotten it wrong...

when you have a beard, it might be difficult, coz the pics are usually quite clear...

in europe, they dont come and show you the pic...
either you are stopped right away or you get snail mail...
you can object to the accusations - there you can claim someone else drove...
if there is problem with the gender or so, they might visit you with the pic...
till then its all without additional cost...

i think, when you have a lawyer you can see the pic (the police file) before making a statement (admission)...

best is to find a scapegoat looking a bit like you and try...
if the pic is too good, bad luck...

but 160 km/h and 500 baht is really generous...
in europe its a few hundred euros PLUS driving license gone for 3 months...

if you have three times in europe within a certain period (i think it was extended to 24 months), then your driving license is permanently withdrawn, too..

My SIL in the States ran a red light (actually turned against it just as it changed) and she was emailed the video of it- there are no points given on a license as it's impossible to see who's driving, though.

when a red light just turned, they dont take pics in europe...
it has to be red for a few seconds already...

the cameras at red lights are different to the speeds...
speeding cams are extremely clear... in europe...

I bought one of these, a Cobra, in Tuk Com and they do work. It often goes off on the 7 about a kilometer before one of the bridges where I often see a bloke wearing black clothes and a balaclava in the shadows with a camera.

But like I said, I lent it to a mate.

when there is no front pic, then claim grannie drove - as long as she has a driving license...

not that it matters for granny, but you shouldnt hand your car to someone without driving license...

Good tip for the GF then. Keep a false beard in the glove compartment and clip it on after paying the toll. When the photo arrives she can demonstrate that clearly she was not driving and it must have been the idiot farang that was visiting at the time.

    yes, a wig, a beard...

but as the owner you have to say who it was - or could have been...

they dont usually buy, your car was temporary stolen or so...

About 10 years ago a friend of mine in London got caught 3 times on different cameras in the space of a week.
An aquaintance told him to make some small changes to the outside of the car, which he did, and say he was tucked up inbed at the time with the car garaged.
This was when 'cloneing' was rife in the UK.
The old bill gave him a letter saying his car had been cloned and he never had to pay any more camera fines.

Can't see that working here though.

Got the pic now. Turns out the wifey was blagging me, I was only doing 139kph and it says it lets you have up to 130 so I was robbed!

The picture is taken from quite high up so it wasn't the little balaclava'd bastard. The sheet also says it was between the 21-22km sign on the 7 and by the time of day I was heading back to Pattaya.

Wifey phoned the police yesterday and asked about the 3 strikes and you're out rule, they said there's no such rule as long as you pay, so I'm back in the good books.
She also asked about blaming the driver not the owner, they just said as long as someone pays the fine they don't care.

Ah yes the old Safety camera bollocks and Speed = accidents crap.
I remember going to a meeting where the local authority wanted to place a camera and had a good discussion with one of the so called experts there. I asked him if speed = accidents and he said of course. hence the need for all the cameras. So I asked a certain camera had been in the news as raking in over 500,000 pounds in fines in a month. I said that surely according to his own statements there must have been carnage on the roads for that many motorists to be caught speeding and be fined. It turned out there hadn't been a single incident in all the so called dangerous speeding.
As you say here they don't try to make it anything other than what it is. A revenue generator and nothing more. Here also it is the equivalent of a tenner and thats it. back home its 160 pound fine, plus penalty points plus insurance goes up mega amounts.
I do find it funny that people here complain about it ?
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !
