    Toyota Turbo Diesel Hilux

We thought about purchasing a Turbo Toyota Hilux for when we are in Thailand. Very tidy 2008-9 model with 100 ks on it.
I have heard they are unreliable ??

The Toyotas are not unreliable; quite the opposite. Some engines may be better than others, some models may be better than others, but a Toyota truck (or car) won't let you down - they have a very high reputation in Thailand. Go for it.

Not true, the 3L engine was complete shite I conveyed my opinion to Toyota the day it arrived in the showroom and was politely asked to leave.
They suffered from overheating and warped cylinder heads and had to be withdrawn in a hurry.

They were not fitted with a turbo so the OP has avoided one lemon

That will be the 2KD-FTV engine.
Good engine except the injectors which are prone to failure and you'll get about 12-13 kpl
The problem in Thailand is the service history, don't take the sellers word for it.

My 3 litre turbo Isuzu motor has just done 200,000 kms and never missed a beat.

Heaps of power - have a look at Isuzu before you decide. Be careful buying second hand in Thailand,

    1. When the free servicing finishes, Thais can be a bit lax.

    2. Second hand vehicles are not much cheaper than new, IMHO

i heard pre 07 models , 2.5/3.0 ltr turbo had/have injector seal problems (made of copper)

you will know if a seal is gone as it will smoke , simple dont drive any further and replace with alluminium ones,

all storys of over heating /head damage/injector probs and complete engine failure(if you persist in driving whilst it is smoking and losing power) are in relation to these seal failures,

seals leak and heat up/contaminate oil , oil ways/scavenger clog and Bang goes your engine,

worth keeping in mind if you do buy one!

    ------------

although id say better the devil u know and stay wiv a vigo over isuzu anyday
will not put up wiv the "Nanny state" so don't push it on me.

Have you got any links for that please.
I googled in yesterday and the only info I found was that it was either fuel quality and/or the material the injectors were made from.
The post 2007 models were fitted with a different injector but I found no mention of seals

It was pre-08 3.0 motors that had the issue with injector seals, in some cases engines were replaced under warranty.

Plenty of hits on google for "hilux injector seals leaking".

i didnt read it on the net , it was a mechanic friend that told me,

heres a few examples i grabbed off the net in minutes though,

I think there was a major recall within europe and even stories of the main dealer replacing engines at a huge discount /for free and even after the warranty had expired,,

i was lead to believe that the copper seal were no good and had to be replaced with allum ,,

not the end of the world , but i was told that you should not drive as soon as it starts smoking (if u get that much warning,, but u should),,

i.e dont just keep driving thinking its the common fault of a diesel turbo EGR valve otherwise it could get expensive,,

worth knowing if u drive one!!!

i have one ,100k and not changed , but ive bought the seals cheap and going to replace december myself,,

it was hilux's october 06 to april 08,, u can find the VIN no ranges of the affected models on the net ,, availible in PDF here,, it says Europe but UK cars are from thai and somewhere else i cannot remember
