    Fog lights - yes or no?

    Getting a small car soon - just for running around town. The sales people and the brochures all seem to say that optional fog lights are a good thing to have, but a couple of motoring websites I've looked at say they're pretty useless at best and can be a danger to other drivers at worst.

    People seem to be divided between:

    People who think they look cool and who use them all the time;

    People who say they're useful but strictly only when it's foggy;

    People who think they might come in handy one day but who've never actually used theirs yet;

    People who say that they're a useless affectation and a waste of money.

    I'm currently near the bottom of the list, but would be interested to hear what other TD members think.
    The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

    Should only be used when very foggy. If you don't have fog up there, then don't bother.

    You dont need fog lights, nor sidelights, rear lights, indicators or a reversing light in Thailand :-)

    No. You almost never need them, they work for shit anyway, and they irritate the hell out of oncoming drivers, some of whom may be armed.

    standard headlights are not very powerful on thai cars, at least not on pickups,

    the foglights are even less powerful, best to buy aftermarket long range hi power spotlamps and fit them where the foglights would have been. they can illuminate double or treble the distance that your headlights can. very useful on unlit roads.

    if they are aligned properly they shouldnt annoy other drivers, and if they do they would be so dazzled and disorientated that you would have plenty of time to make a getaway.

    That is a fair point by Davis, you flash your lights at the wrong person in Thailand and you could be facing a hail of bullets, remember that guy, was it a doctor? Last year who got shot on the highway for doing it?

    Yes, get some fog lights Benbaa, would make a great news story, farang fighting for life forgot about fog lights :-)

    I driven through some heavy fog and they don't do jack shit IMO. Plus a huge waste of fuel.

    I have OEM fog lights on my SUV. They are positioned below the headlights on the lower part of the bumper skirt close to the ground. I like them because they light up the ground immediately in front of the car and adds to my viability.

    I do get annoyed with with big SUV's and trucks that have fog lights that are big and bright and high off the ground and function as a second pair of head lights.

    I think the value and safety of fog lights is a function of where they are located and how they are aimed. Placed lower on the vehicle and aimed closer rather than farther away in distance is better and safer.

    Yours sound the the stock ones on my pickup SEA, again, they don't do shit. In heavy fog you still can't see the ground in front of you. If anything they're dangerous coz shitty Thai drivers will think "yeah cool I can drive through this blind coz I gots me fog lights on"

    "Fog Lights" are just the term to describe the lights and are not necessarily just for fog. My description of the fog lights on my car and how I use them provide me with a functional improvement in being able to see the road in the area that is only minimally covered by the regular head lamps of the car. For me, without considering the fog factor, serve a functional and valuable purpose.

    In town you will not need them. If the car's lights turn out to be unsatisfactory you can either re-aim the lights or upgrade to better bulbs.

    Putting a fog light on the back connected to the reversing light switch can improve visibility for reversing.

    I used to have a Thai Driver who was limousine driver trained by a major Hotel chain, I once asked him why he always (day and night) drove our car with the fog lights on and the answer was "so others can se this is a VIP car and give way"

    Modern projector fog lights do not irritate oncoming drivers very much any-more, but the old type standard ones with their diffuse light pattern does.

    To me they are to be used in fog(and very heavy downpour) and I have yet to encounter fog here in Thailand, that said I do sometimes use mine on small very dark country roads to better see the edges and potholes just in front of the car.

    My Thailand based Pick up has perfectly adequate projector lights and a good high beam giving the speeds I normally drive at, the problem here is the dark sun-film on the front windscreen so favoured by many here in Thailand, it stands to reason you think your lights are weak if you have slapped 40-60% film on an already standard tinted windscreen, that's just crazy you can't see shit and would of-cause be highly illegal in most developed nations.

    Yes if it's foggy. No if it's not foggy. I refused to pay 60,000 baht extra for side indicating mirrors and fog lights; I haven't regretted that...

    ^^No not really AO all car lighting (fog and driving lights^) will eventually be LED for several good reasons, power consumption (Wattage/load on the cars electrical systems), candlelight power (more and stronger light), and longevity (Quality LED's can last a cars whole lifetime). it is the future.

    I have my driving lights on all the time, because they look cool.

    I don't think I have any fog lights on the truck, but I do have a heated rear window, if that helps.

    I agree mate, but its a fad in BKK, pink, green, yellow, blue, all sorts of colors just being used to trick out the car. They are all being done after sales.

    Damn straights S. My neighbor has done a good one. He put two facing the driver and passenger on top of his window washing squirters. Nice to have those two blue lights shining in your face as you drive at night. Sometimes I just like to sit back and scratch my head and wonder.
