Yes AO when it comes to those coloured after-market LED lights you are right, you almost assuredly know there is a Thai behind the wheel when you see one of those disco light wagons I think they are tasteless but then that is just me.

The daytime running light was first mandated, and safety benefits first perceived, in Scandinavian countries where it is frequently and persistently dark during daytime hours in winter time. As ambient light levels increase, the potential safety benefit decreases while the DRL intensity required for a safety improvement increases. The safety benefit produced by DRLs in relatively dark Nordic countries is roughly triple the benefit observed in relatively bright Israel and America.[1]

Fog lights are meant to highlight road markings within approx 5 metres of the car, not actually help you see through the fog, so yes they are useful in heavy fog and also unlit roads, if you have decent road markings.

If you drive in a foggy environment they are

    1. Useful for you to see in the fog
    2. They alert other cars heading towards you that you are there.

If you value you life take them. Along with brakes, tyres and windscreen wipers they are the most critical items on a car/truck

LED lights are more visible and intense, they are also more directional. Most high end cars have them now and they will move down to the cheaper cars once the premium for having them has reduced.

I was trying to remember the last time I saw fog here in Chiang Mai and I came up blank. But sometimes we get some lovely smog. Would you use fog lights in smog?

Unless your town is blanketed in fog every morning why bother?

    If you're a poser - you'll need them.

In my experience they are of limited use anyway.

Try going 80kms or so north past Chiang Dao on the way to Fang. Some savage fog. There is an area called the 'sea of fog'.

Also driving up to Chiang Rai on the flat between mountain ranges around Wiang Pa Pao there's always heavy fog. I've driven through this numerous times and a times you can't see a thing. The stock standard 'fog light' that came with my BT-50 do absolutely fuck all in these conditions.

He's talking about high powered LED headlights, not little coloured LEDs you get for decorating stuff.

I always drive with my fog lights on so that dogs, cats and even small children can tell that I'm not driving a hover car. Instead of just ducking they actually move out the way. I've got a 100% record so far so that must be what they are for.

I thought we were talking about the ones that come standard with most new pickups - those pissy little lights under the headlights that do fuck all and don't even have a cool factor better off with a spoiler imo.

    To Fog or Not!!!!

Most OEM fog lights are just auxiliary lights that will flood the very front of your vehicle with additional light and in no way work as true “FOG” lights.
A proper fog light will have a beam cut off slightly below horizontal so that the driver can see the road ahead and not be blinded by the headlights reflecting back from the fog, this also is the same when driving in a snow storm/blizzard, (I lived in Canada for 38 yrs, lots of Fog snow and a few blizzards). The better fog lights have an amber lens that is easier on the eyes. When you do strike a good patch of fog (not going to happen in Thailand) and you do have fog lamps, turn off your head lights you’ll be amazed at how much you can see with propper fog lights.

As for DRL’s (Day Time Running Lamps) they are mandatory in Canada and a few Scandinavian countries. The best thing to happen to motor vehicles imho, even during daylight hours. WHY do Motor Cycles have them, SO YOU CAN SEE THEM!! LOL.

When I retired from Canada and went back to NZ ,I first had to retrain my peripheral vision to look for a moving object not a moving light. I have found that a moving light is always easier to notice that an unlit vehicle.

I have yet to see any fog here in Thailand worthy of putting fog lights on. But that said I do drive most of the time, day and night with them on so that any one will notice my vehicle sooner. I just hope that some chai will not mistake me for 2 motorcy and try to go between the lights!!!

Thais being the selfish retards that they are only turn their lights on when they really cannot see a bloody thing and have no reason the care if other road users can see them or not.

As the guys said, on pickups they are useful as the headlights are higher off the ground and in town, tighter situations they are great to illumonate the area just in front of you. On the highway at night I turn them off as it seems to make my eyes more tired having them on with the added brightness. With them off you seem to concentrate more ahead where the main beams are shining on.
