It might have more HP (though not torque, which will probably be more important to you) but it's a 2-stroke, which is a very different animal from a civilized 4-stroke- for the riding you said you want to do it's the wrong choice.
^ yes. I'm sure you're right, but I'm stupid and...
^^ very true.
I'm gonna pick up my driving licence this week; on Rama 2, you can't go out on any day without being stopped by the police; yesterday, at the base of Rama 2, they were sticking folks with no licence into the back of a meat wagon! Half a dozen cops, 10 or so bikes parked up and unhappy and sweltering looking riders chained together in a meatwagon...
Cycling should be banned!!!
Cops have been all over the place the the past week.
I had to blast through 'em on three separate occasions.
Love doing that! As if I'm stopping for you, monkey-man.
It's not a matter of 'stupid'- it's a matter of choosing the right tool for the job.
2-strokes can make more hp than 4-strokes of equal (or even greater) displacement, but they are also extremely 'peaky' (meaning the power-band is both very narrow and high up in the rev range, so you have to keep the bitch on the boil to make it go fast- this is great on a race track, but not very practical for the street, where you'll find the bike falling on its face constantly unless you're always near red-line- I would bet I could get around the city in traffic faster on a 250 4-stroke than I could on a 250 2-stroke with more power- I could certainly do it with much less effort)- you'll be doing most of your riding in the mid-range, where you'll be using more of a 4-stroke's available power than you would with a 2-stroke (even if its peak hp is actually higher).
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

^ good points. I will try to test ride an NSR too. If I can hir one, I will.
I think you'll be surprised at how you have to rev the piss out of the NSR to get it to start moving (and then it's like a light-switch as far as the power goes- all of a sudden it's all there).
When you read a spec chart, pay attention to not just how much hp a bike puts out, but where in the rev range the bike makes its peak power (a bike that makes it at 8K will be VERY different from a bike that makes it at 11K)- you also want to see a nice flat torque curve that peaks very low in the rev range and stays that way until you approach red-line.
^ I'm looking for something along these lines...
Well, that's a pick-up truck, so perhaps it's not the best comparison...
This is the power chart for a 2000 Hayabusa (a bike I owned)- notice how flat the torque curve is, and how early in the range it comes on at close to 100%- that's the shape (if not the numbers- you need a few more miles under your belt before you can look at bikes in this league) you want to see:
??? I saw 'lightening' and presumed it was a fukin fighter jet! (though, upon second glance 360hp doesn't look too impressive for a fighter jet )Originally Posted by FailSafe

Here we have an NSR power chart- see how peaky it is?
^ looks fun, but probably a pain in the arse (not ass...) in certain situations.
I had an NSR 125, and I don't remember it being a problem, just got used to the riding style, and wondering whether you were gonna make it through the gap or not.
250cc Beginner Bike Shootout Newbs rejoice; the Honda CBR250R, Kawasaki Ninja 250R and Hyosung GT250 go head-to-head-to-head! ~ International Motor Sport
"As we explained earlier, the Ninja’s lack of grunt became really frustrating when negotiating traffic, while the Honda could smartly squirt through gaps in traffic."

That's a very 'streetable' power-band (for any of the three).
Notice that while the Kawasaki makes the most peak hp, it's makes way less than the other two in the mid-range (which is where you'll generally find yourself on the street)- if I had to choose a bike based on that chart, I would take the Honda.
BB What I would look at what fits with the money in your pocket & will be used to go to work.
^ after all these police checks on Rama 2, especially the one I saw yesterday when riders were stacked into the meat wagon, I'll get a driving license first; plan to do so next week, either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Please complete your organ donor card first!!! Have you seen the way they drive here? I would prefer a Humvee if I could afford it!!
Where you are yes good idea to go legal
That what I need to do got pulled up a week ago the first police man aks where I was going, a second police man said hello & a third police man ask is that 1
I said yes it is 1 & told him there is no electric start they shake there heads
The third police man give me a rub on the back & sends me on my way.
I have been here 7 year & they have no aked me for my licence.
OK I've had enough, (three beers already)
A novice for a 33kms commute!
Buy a fucking Honda PCX; its comfy its supercool looking for a scooter. Its a techno marvel, and its fucking comfortable and offers great weather protection.
No brainer, bye!
If you think a Ninja 250 has a shit powerband then then NSR is something even worse.
You could get a nice CBR400 Repsol for not too much. Rigger used to have a lovely one.
Wouldn't advise that for a novice needing reliability, without motorbike contacts in Thailand.
Most have been cooked at this stage, dodgy legal work, and unless you know a good decent mechanic with a good source to parts than you'll likely be on your scooter most of the time while it's in the shop having anything decent on it being taken off and kept by the 'mechanics' there.
By the way, there's a new Honda CBR400 being released within the next year.
Whether it will be a 400cc version of the new CBR250, ie. single cyl, or something more like the inline 4 we just have to wait and see.
Actually I just know that they're coming out with a new 400 or 600 for the Jap market to be built in Thailand. But might as well spread some rumours that it's gonna be a new CBR400.
I'd guess it will be a 400cc single or v-twin, be pretty bland and more about fuel economy than anything fun, and will have a CBR badge on it.
3 weeks it's been now, gone from 650 down to 125.
All this deliberating over which bike to have, and now worryin about having a license in Thailand.
Fuk me, wait til you see the motocy Death Toll over here
Get yourself a scooter for work, then hire a sports bike when you wanna travel
Actually, the KSR110 looks pretty neat... Comes in pink too.
