Poor argument. You ride a motorcycle to have fun, you wear the protective gear to minimize the risk to yourself while enjoying the same fun. Same goes for many activities, eg. you use a rope while rock climbing, you wear a life jacket while white water rafting etc..

Western nanny states do a great job of protecting naive knobs like you from the realities of life outside them. Spend a bit more time in Asia or other places as other than a sex-tourist and the odds will catch up to you.

Been in Asia long enough to have seen a lot of accidents, and even friends badly injured in motorcycle accidents. Drove past a bad smash on my way to work in Rayong on Monday. Couple of Thai students wiped off a motorbike, no helmets, brains over 2 lanes. Darwin in Motion. Ho hum.

Holding that video up as 'good' riding is complete idiocy, though- you can be the best rider in the world (and you're not) and you still won't be able to predict (or react to) a quick move by a car/truck/whatever- sooner or later you will get nailed (probably by someone pulling out from the left side of the street).
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

The problem with forums, no nothing clowns like SoCal, get equal airtime to others that actually have real experiences.

I would never go without my shark, even on my bicycle I use a quality bike helmet.
My first crash was 48 years ago, a couple of months in hospital and I was right again.
Unlike socal who was permanently brain damaged when he fell off his skidoo.

My last crash was 9 months ago when I fell off after hitting a plastic water hose while riding around Nong prajak lake on my bike, low speed but as I fell head down it saved me a nasty bump on the head.

My mate fell off his cycle a couple of years back, spent 6 (expensive) months in hospital before he died. Note to socal he didn't have scratch on his body ie no internal bleeding but the smack on his unprotected head killed him

I know that a in a full on compaction i am not going to survive an injury with my crash helmet. But i am sure that i would much rather be skidding along the surface with a helmet than without one. But maybe idiots such as yourself and others in here have leather skin on their even thicker skulls so do not cut or suffer gravel rash I will always wear my helmet , it helps me feel safe and i know that even a little protection is better than none.

Thai drivers will pull out into fast traffic, poodle along at about 40 klm for a couple of kays, then suddenly see that everything is going faster and do the same.

    UP to them.
Some places have helmet laws, some don't.
Depends where you live whether it is sociably acceptable or not.

Funny thing though, out of all the laws regarding motorbikes, cars, highways, etc. here in Thailand, this is the only one they ever enforce.

    Personally, I usually wear one.
Doesn't bother me either way if someone else does or not.

That was a shocking display of just plain hoping that no one decided to change direction. It was all a game of chance, no skill whatsoever. Just luck !

Just wait. Sooner or later some Thai politician is going to have a brainfart and decide everyone must have a condom over their exhaust pipes to cut down on carbon emissions.

How so? Thinking it's a reasonable idea to protect your skull in the off chance that you go arse over tit one day and crack it open like a coconut or putting condoms on your exhaust pipe?

As I get older I am starting to wear more gear. I wear 2 kidney belts one on my torso and then over top of that the one on my chest plates. My next purchases will be a neck brace, knee supports and some wrist supports.

I need a way to stop my thumbs from dislocating.

    Any ideas will be welcome

When you have all of that gear on it makes you want to get the bike moving fast. Especially in the hot season

Wearing a helmet saved my life at least 2 times riding big bikes in Switzerland, and more than one time when riding my trial Montesa bike in the mountains.

Here I only ride a CBR250R but I always wear a motorbike jacket, gloves, a proper cheap helmet (Real, full face), boots and at least a jeans.

What surprises me most is the occasionally mocking look of those who ride without any protection (flip flop, short and no helmet).

I don't mean that it will save my life if I hit a wall at 100 km / h, but it may be useful in a fall in traffic. Avoiding weeks with bruised parts on my body or something worse.
