Nice place, but it's become very expensive
(Nice thread, by the way)
Yea, Mrs Hat misses uNZud, the kids will get better schooling than their overpriced international schools so far, they'll have an even chance when entering the workforce and not be discriminated against due to their ethnicity, won't get cheated at every turn etc etc etc . . .
Cooold winters . . . just spent a month there at temps between 6 and 16 - quite nice actually. Showers without sweating immediately after - suits and no sweat.
Corruption among the constabulary? Highly doubtful
Just so many things to speak for it, mate. Mrs Hat can't stand Australia and isn't too fond of Aussies, so it's NZ
I was born in the tropics, spent most of my life in the tropics except for Germany, NL and France and the US - cold is actually quite pleasant.
Anyway, flights are cheap (admittedly not as cheap as here) and new destinations beckon
Time for whitey country again
Looks like only you suffer from an inferiority complex
I have not been back to Langkawi for quite a few years now, I do like it and must get back.
What do you consider very expensive ? It's duty free status provides cheap drinking and local food was on Par with KL.
I imagine middle of the road digs are still available so if not going High So in the above departments whats the big deal. ?
Yea, I'm thinking along the lines of nice hotels on the beach - booze and fags not really relevant to me - local food is good anyway, but we are surrounded by it every day
Yep, Terry , that doesn't make any sense at all, unless you are Malaysian.
That currency has taken a right walloping this year and is tipped to get even worse.
Never been a better time to visit.
Heres some graphs showing how Brits, Europeans, Thais and Septics are much better off there over the last 5 years.
The aussies don't fare as well, but when you look what you were getting 6 months ago.............
^
Good old Aussie dollar ain't to flash innit. Still OK in Malaysia though.
Anyway, I ain't Hi-So, I'm Middle so.
That means that Langkawi will be exactly the same price wise as last time I was there.
I do like Malaysia, the locals are a good crew I reckon.
Indeed, Terence, you have it right. Malaysia generally offers far better value than LoS and the locals have that virtue of not being cursed by congenital stupidity, unrelenting lawlessness and an avarice that transcends all other considerations. Imagine Canang beach if it were in Pattaya, Hua Hin or Phuket?
I feel it's time I gave the wingman an airing and I think Langkawi beckons.
I have to say, I have never had a bad experience in all my times in Malaysia. The only downside is the dearth of a decent cooked breakfast with real bacon and sausages.
In 1987, I found Malaysia to be the most boring country I'd visited in Asia. The locals were the most disinterested in foreigners and as in Indonesia, almost every male smoked.....often on non-smoking buses or right under No Smoking signs.
Congenital stupidity was most active in the Malay males I encountered and with a few interesting exceptions, the Indian and Chinese people were rather jaded and disinterested in chatting with myself or other Westerners I got feedback from.
Thank you for reminding me about the cursed ringgit . . .
No point selling up here as the currency malaise (yes, on purpose) is making this untenable.
When I live in Indonesia I found this acceptable. They simply leave one alone.Originally Posted by Latindancer

Well done, Abby . . . how are those calf muscles going? Any semblance of muscle tone yet to play rugby and drag 120lb boat around?
