Funnily enough the Dr. gave me some Cholchcine, I've now taken it. I'm really hoping that this is not going to help ergo I don't have Gout. That said, if I do then I'll find out quicker than blood tests. However, I've taken some painkillers too so if it's muscular they will fix that for a short period of time. Which makes things clear as mud...

Hope you're not going to join the Gout Club Al , as its a real bitch of thing to suffer. So all the best with that. . .

I think the tablets will cure you. Either send me Fifty Guineas now, or buy me a pint and some sticky rice and chicken when I am next in Bangkok. Meanwhile, please lay of the Prik Gaerng.

    Next, please ..........

Well, one things for sure if it does sort it out I'll let everyone know. I just don't think it is. If it is, I'll know that I can trust this Dr. No problem admitting I'm wrong, it has happened once before. Sticky rice and Chicken it is if you're right.

You know what though, when I started the thread I didn't realise there'd be so many people who suffer from it. Eye opener.

have read this post with great interest,as i have similar problems with pain from a very old injury on my foot also. I was diagnosed with high uric acid (gout) and did a lot of reading about the subject and discovered something.
if you have ever serviced or maintained a swimming pool you will know about ph levels and how to raise and lower them, to lower uric acid use sodium bicarbonate 1 teaspoon to 1 standard glass of water twicw a day, works wonders.
The other rather nasty thing i discovered that eating out or even off the street, most thai food contains MSG, and that is a huge trigger to uric acid, check that your wife or girfriend does not use this product in the food she prepares as mine did, her mother does, as her sister does. Now having removed msg from my diet, and drinking a glass of Sodium Bicarbonate every day, i can eat and drink anything i like. I hope you dont have gout, but if you do, lower your acid level and stay away from msg

I had my first gout attack in my twenties, always my big toe but once my ankle too (bit of a worry). It's a bummer, but you can live with it. I get an attack of gout about yearly, usually as a direct result of overindulging. Keep some colchisin and ibuprofen on hand, and it shouldn't last more than a few days.

Prevention is better than cure of course. ^ Good advice, and eat more veges, less meat.

Yeah, the point is I don't think I have Gout. I have underlying problems with my foot from ankle surgery.[/QUOTE]

I went to the local Dr for some pain relief from when a western doctor crippled me.
He said you have gout, I said nick off I dont even drink.
Some time later I was really crook and was taken to hospital. The nice Thai lady Dr said I had fever but she thought I had other problems and wanted me to stay overnight.
They took some X-rays and blood tests. THREE things that I have tried to get help for from western Drs she diagnosed. One of them was a very high acid level.

I can recognise the signs now if I am about to get gout, I recommend the Bicarb method, the rest you need to work out yourself because everyone is different, I cant touch tomatoes.
That is of course if it is gout.

Now for the joke !!! My wife has gout - everytime I touch her knee she says GOUT!!!

Since you've mentioned problems following your surgery and an awkward gate you could have plantar fasciatis. If you read about it it usually mentions pain in the arch of the foot but the tissue actually extends to all the toes. The awkward gate you have could be stressing the tissue under your little toe and creating your problem.

If it's not gout you may need to look for a qualified podiatrist to prescribe orthotic insoles for your shoe.

got same problem from busted ankle a few years back. If i line my knees straight i can see my right foot is angled too far out, conversely, if my feet are straight my right knee faces in a bit. I get a large callous on the ball of my foot behind little toe, gets painful, soak it and rub it off with emery paper stuff from boots chemist etc. Doesn't gout make your feet swell up, don't think you have gout.

My foot is almost exactly as you describe but, it did swell a bit.

I took the 3,000 different pain killers I was given swelling and pain were reduced. I then took the colcochine and felt no further relief. The foot is still sore but the pain killers are working. I can now more accurately feel the source of the pain. The ball of my foot behind the big toe is sore but it is more painful along the outside of my foot further towards the arch.

As you say in the above post I was starting to get pain in my right knee from walking like a mong because I was to walk with my foot twisted and putting all my 95kg on the instep of my foot. That's starting to go now.

    I think therefore it's a sprain.

    alwarner 1 - 0 thai doctor.

^that said, I'm not ripping on the Thais here that's not what the thread is about, when I've needed patching up here the service has been excellent. I think I'm probably just echoing other peoples sentiments about strange diagnosis. I mean to diagnose a problem without looking at the patient and then be unwilling to take a pre existing condition into consideration seems a bit strange.

    On the mend.

Don't drink Heineken Beer. Take Voltaren from Holland. Going to alleviate any foot swelling and joint pain. Three tabs and your dancing!

Cholchcine is a very, very old remedy. It's also quite toxic.

The only way to really tell if it is gout is to have a blood test to check out your urate levels.

I started getting gout when I was 18 and have been pricked and prodded more than a $10 hooker....

Most beers will increase uric acid, but thanks for the info about Heineken.

Gout sufferers don't have to have high uric acid, btw. It's how antibodies in white blood cells react to uric acid around the joints. (Gout is usually hereditary).

Voltaren is a very good reactive drug to an attack, but people that suffer from gout often can pro-actively avoid attacks by alkalysing their blood with baking soda in water.

I've had had tendonitis in my left hand and shoulder for some time so finally broke down and saw the quack in Muang Suphan. Told him I didn't want cortozone jabs or painkillers so he hooked me up with an MD there with degrees in Accupuncture (from China). After 1/2 dozen sessions I'm almost pain free. It works...

I'd be fronting up at the nearest hospital with an MRI machine and get full on scans done to ascertain the condition of all bones in the feet and ankle.

Thats where the smart money goes and start from there dude.
