    ATM Problem No Cash Dispensed

Has anyone had this problem, and how did you resolve it please. On Thursday morning September 1st, I attempted to withdrawal 14000 Baht from a Bangkok Bank ATM in Sattahip. I used a Visa Debit/ATM card and entered my PIN, the amount I wanted and agreed to the 150 baht surcharge. The machine then said "please wait" for about 2 full minutes, then returned my card and shut itself off. The screen turned red and the red/green indicator on the machine turned red, it did not dispense any money.

Of course my American checking account has been charged $472.00 for the Baht I did not receive plus Visa's 1% and the normal non-coop atm charge.

Is it possible to resolve this here with Bangkok Bank? Anyone tried it? Will Bangkok Bank work with me or will I have to do a charge reversal through my American Bank. Today I a holiday in the USA, so I expect I will hear from my bank by e-mail tonight.
I was hoping Bangkok Bank might discover the discrepancy and credit my account, without my having to ask, but it's been 4 days and that has not happened.
Thank you for any assistance. $500 is too much to just forget about.

Yes, mine was with a kasikorn bank account at a kasikorn atm though. About 18,000thb I believe.

I have a thread on it here I think. About 18 months ago.

All sorted out very well, went into a main branch to go through the details, took 2-3 days to have it re-deposited.

Being an overseas bank I imagine it will be a bit of a kunt to fix up as they usually have very strict policies about the account holder having to be present etc etc.

Sorry, but it's gone 4 days without you personally reporting it in a Bangkok Bank branch?

They will have to do a physical count on the ATM for confirmation, which can take a day or two, but you should have absolutely no problem resolving the issue (which isn't uncommon).

I think that means the machine has run out of money so it should be easy to get a refund

Contact the bank, easy to do. The machine logs all money in and out, so you just need to let them know.

Same thing happened to me with a Bangkok Bank machine. I called Bangkok Bank and they said it would take a minimum 3 months!

    It took 3 months.

Thanks, I'll take one of the Thai teachers from school with me and go to the local Bangkok Bank branch tomorrow. I just wanted to hear back from my American bank first. I thought they (BKK Bank) might take it more seriously if another bank contacted them instead of me, that's why I've waited.

I think there was a power failure, when I got to work, about 2 blocks away all the lights were out at the school.

    ^ Looks good then Bob

I was thinking of all the Card Scammers here and why your money was deducted from your balance

In the UK the Machine tells you there are no funds inside

Could it be down to a power cut, but then why would it spit your card out ? I don't know

Anyhow at least these guys have put your mind at rest

    Good Luck

First, document as much about the incident as you can -- note the time, ATM location etc.

Push for a solution from both ends. Call your American bank and have them record the incident, and also go to the relevant Bangkok Bank branch as soon as possible, take it up with them, try to get something in writing (at least the record that the incident is being investigated). Bangkok Bank is more likely to resolve it than your bank -- it's their issue after all. Don't stop at just filing one complaint, follow up regularly if you can (but no matter what happens, always stay calm and polite with Thais). Bureaucracies often need prodding. Good luck.

Please let us know how this is resolved. Like you say it might have been a power failure - but we all learn from these experiences!

(My worst fear is the card gets eaten at an ATM when I'm in another country where I don't speak the language and on my way to the airport - already late for a flight - and needed the money to pay for the cab!)
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

It has happened to me in Bangkok TWICE with a Kasikorn bank card being used in a Bangkok Bank machine. On both occasions the money returned in to my account within 7 days. Another time at an ATM in Phuket the same thing happened when I was using a UK bank card in a Bangkok Bank machine and to this day (3 years later) I still have never had my 10K Baht returned.

I will write what happens. Overnight, which is day time at home, I got this message from my bank:
Dear XXXXXXX Credit Union Member,A dispute was opened on your behalf for the transactions. The disputes can take approximately 7-10 days.If you have further questions, please submit a new secure message or contact the Call Center

I've had my card eaten twice. Annoying, but easily resolved by having my bank (credit union) send a new one to my brother who DHL's it to me here. I also keep a small Thai Bank account for just that kind of contingency and have credit cards I can pull cash from if I'm really desperate.

The only times I have experienced a problem with ATM transactions in Thailand have been with Bangkok Bank machines.

Cards eaten...money not dispensed...etc. I will say BB are good at resolving the issues...they seem to have plenty of relevant experience.

I have avoided using them for at least three years now and threads such as this do nothing to convince me to use them again.
I see fish. They are everywhere. They don't know they are fish.

This happened to an English friend of mine that was visiting this year. His card got eaten at an ATM on Surawong road. He just stayed by the machine all day trying to get one of the staff from inside the bank to get it out for him. Eventually one of the staff opened the machine and retrieved his card for him.

I didn't even think that was possible.

This seems to happen so regularly that I shit bricks every time I use my UK card in a Thai ATM. I've heard rumours that you can go to a teller with your debit card and withdraw money that way. It's seems a lot safer but know not if it's possible?

yes you can, as long as you have your passport with you

you just have to queue and talk to a real person

I used to have a special UK account card I kept just for the ATMs, with another card as backup. Now we have local bank cards

Lucky you found a BBL ATM anywhere south of Pattaya!!
Very rare around these parts .. it's usually a 22km trip for us to find one that is working
Guess they will not be all that responsive to paying you a little interest on funds withheld or inconvenience money what seems to be their digital stuff up.

Yes, you can. As DrA said, you need to take your passport. There is a poster on this forum who will only withdraw cash this way, never uses a machine.

I guess this is an obvious tip - but it's always best to use an ATM attached to a bank that is actually open - rather than a stand-alone ATM machine. If your card gets eaten the staff can open the machine and return the card - they can then also immediately sort out any concerns about whether the money was withdrawn (or not).

If you're near Asoke, use the Citibank ATM. They have the swipe-type machine which doesn't take your card -- you just put it in and pull it out before proceeding.

This has happened to me on three occasions - each with a different Thai bank ATM. On each occasion the Thai bank told me I had to contact my own bank in the UK which I did. The Thai bank responses ranged from helpful, though apologetic because of inability to do anything, to downright rude and dismissive. My own bank in the UK was helpful and sympathetic each time but it still took a few days to have the money re-credited to my account. I, too, will always use an ATM attached to a Thai bank that is open at the time. Now, I only use my Thai bank cash card at an ATM.
