"Skype" is free if you call someone who is also on "Skype". Even better if you both have a web cam, you can see each other as well. Just register,.
It's also very cheap to call regular land lines.
You need Skype on your PC and then buy "skype out" credit (can use paypal or CC). You can then call land lines and mobiles very cheaply. I put $25 dollars credit on and lasts for ages, call my wife everyday.
I just found an application for mobile phones-Nimbuzz which allows you to make skype call on your mobile phone via wireless LAN connection. Saves you being tied to your computer to make calls.

No landlines in our village yet, so skype would be a no go.
I am at work when i need to call, between 2 and 3 uk time.
Bless the wife she regularily calls me at 4 or 5 in the bloody morning.
We have the option, and use of the web cam, but that is limited as she has to go to the next village for a connection.
anyway thx for the replies and a merry xmas to all.
think you might have missed the point. Skype is internet.Originally Posted by meepho

You are at work and presumably have the internet, you buy a usb skype phone, buy some skype out credit then dial your wifes mobile and proceed to chat for as long as your credit lasts which will be so cheap you will not even consider how much the call will be costing you. She does not need the internet! Just a mobile phone and it won't cost her a cent. Forget the video for now, just call her everyday and make her happy.

^ Wot he said.
It's easy to find Landline to mobile, just Google cheap calls to thailand and you should find some around the 1/2/3p per min. mark.
If you really need mobile to mobile it's more difficult, because as the mobile companies become aware of the access number you use, they slap a premium on it, which is presumably what happened with Cherry that you said you were using.
You need to check with your mobile company what they charge to connect to the access number but be aware that they can change this at any time without notifying you.
If he's on line a headset/mike will do it. That's what I use.Originally Posted by Bung
niftylist.co.uk will give you a list of cheap numbers to call via a landline phone. If you get yourself a headset for your PC Voipdiscount.com will give you 120 days of 'free' calls to both landline and mobile Thai numbers for 10 Euros.
They are crap compared to usb phones. The teerak will need as clear a call as you can give her, trust me.Originally Posted by jandajoy
Actually, when I was in the UK, I just went into the Paki corner store with all the calling cards stuck on the window, told him I needed to call Thailand and he looked up which was best. 5 quid and talked for ages.

Using Skype to call landlines and mobiles in Thailand is not cheap, it's free (ok, I mean you pay your subscription and then don't pay any more for calls) if you buy a monthly package (about 450 Baht/month) - free calls to about 30 countries (although quite a few of those countries don't include free mobile calls) . I use it for business and for personal calls all the time. You can also buy landline numbers from skype and forward them to your own landline or mobile in Thailand for free. I have Skype landline numbers in LA, Dublin, and London all forwarded to my Thai mobile so that people in the US, Ireland, or Britain can call me cheaply. Using those numbers also looks a little better when doing business with people abroad.
I've also got a google voice number which forwards to Skype (because you have to pretend you're in the US if you want a google voice number) which forwards to my Thai mobile, surprisingly it works pretty well.

Thx for the replies, and i am looking into a few of them at the moment,
It is very hard for me to get access to a land line,as i am mobile from project to project, and they are not big enough to justify a land line, when mobiles are available.
I have the computer with mobile internet, so will try that avenue, i apologise for being a bit slow on the skype, i thought that was computer to computer, learn something new every day, thx.
For those that asked, i'm in the UK.
I did find an interesting one,
Google martin lewis on moneysavingexpert.com look under calls abroad, and he shows you a very interesting little glitch that works.
