Phuket Police promise peace in Patong

Col Grissak is interviewed by a reporter from the state-run National News Bureau after last night's ceremony. Unarmed Tourist Police Volunteers look on.

Vice Governor Teerayut Eimtrakul (center, in beige) stopped several times to meet tourists and pose for photos.

PATONG, PHUKET: Kathu Police and supporting organizations held a ceremony on Soi Bangla last night that included a brief photo shoot with tourists, assuring them that their safety is a top concern.

Activities started at 7pm in front of the Baan Sukhothai Hotel & Spa on Soi Bangla.

The large ceremony was presided over by Phuket Vice Governor Teerayut Eimtrakul.

Also present were Phuket Provincial Police Deputy Commander Chalit Kaewyarat; Phuket Tourist Police Superintendent Ekachai Pramanakul; Kathu Police Superintendent Grissak Songmoonnark; and Patong Deputy Mayor Chairat Sukhabaan.

Representatives of 14 offices, including the Tourist Police Volunteers, Marine Police, Highway Police, Immigration, Navy officers, members of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM-Phuket) and local administrative bodies also took part.

After the ceremony, the officials took a stroll down Soi Bangla, where they greeted tourists and handed them bookmarks, encouraging them to use the Tourist Police hotline at 1155 if they fall victim to any crime.

Col Grissak Songmoonnark encouraged tourists with any problems to contact police.

There is an especially large contingent of foreign Tourist Police Volunteers ready to lend a helping hand in Patong, he said.

What is the Thai obsession with ceremonies all about
Bloody hell the police were just stating that they will try to do their job ?

The other week they had a ceremony when they sank an old dive boat to make a new dive reef ?

While I am on the subject - the other one that gets right up my nose is the overuse of the word 'Festival"
A shop has sale and it becomes a 'Festival'
The biggest shopping mall in Phuket is called 'Central Festival'
Any thoughts on this or am I alone ?
