Question Bringing a few bikes to Thailand

A few of my friends want to come here and do a serious biking trip (a few hundred kilometers on MTBs).

Problem is how they can get their bikes from Europe to Thailand - and preferably also back again.

Can it be part of their luggage when they go here - and have anyone had to pay for bringing their bikes or other large pieces of luggage?

    yes.

    and no.

but they'll need to use either a bike box or pack them separately. pedals off, tires deflated.

I think isaan riders or GT forum has a write up on how to do it, I think you will have to leave a large deposit to much sure you take the bike back out, and they said you can clear Bangkok customs in a day

    Ehm, that's motor bikes.

For bicycles, clearing customs is the time it takes to shove it through the green channel.

I think many (most/all?) airlines don't charge for a bike when it's packed properly; i.e. it doesn't count towards your allowed check-in weight. Similar to golf bags in that sense. (Budget airlines being an obvious exception)

Excellent, just what I wanted to hear. Have anyone tried getting a bicycle through customs?

I brought my brand new by bicycle in no probs. had it in a proper traveling bag though that wasn't cheap but worth it if they have expensive bikes and want to travel with them.

I say no probs but they did manage to lose all my luggage for 4 days and one wheel was slightly buckled and the frame scratched a little where it chafed but that was probably from being over handled due to them losing it. I just took it to a local bike shop and he did a top job of straightening it out.
