Moving lots of stuff from Bangkok to CM

I have a bunch of books and other crap I need to send up to Chiang Mai. Some lighting equipment as well.

Post office is one option. But I might actually have enough stuff where hiring a freight company to truck it up there would make more sense. One advantage is that they might pick it up from where I'm at now, and wouldn't mind if I sent some luggage along as well.

I have an eye to price but service and reliability are more important than getting the cheapest rate.

    Any recommendations?

That's about what I thought. Great if I could get a minivan or truck to run my stuff up there, without having to go with them.

Depending on when you did this the price now will surely be more given the steep increase in petrol price.

For sure Norton, I paid 5k for a truck to haul a load of household goods from CM to Phetchabun 6 years ago, and to move a little less back up here last month was 11k.

Booking with a regular freight line will hopefully be less than trying to commandeer a local truck.

Given what you said, the 10k I originally guesstimated for the latter option is probably too low.

I'll post the results after I call around a bit.

I’ve no idea if they’re still around and haven’t used them. They advertise on PantipMarket.

My move south was a private truck as far as I know, but the one we just had was a freight hauler for some national company, I just do not remember the name of the co.,, I can't read Thai or I might remember it.

JVK movers - 38k bkk-cm, 'soup to nuts' executive service (don't need that level of service, my stuff is already packed)

Santa Fe - seems about the same

Document Parcel Express - charge by weight, no truck option; they will do a pickup
    - about 800 baht a 20kg box (going by the rates they quoted)
    - I might go with this one, though I'd prefer a flat rate truck hire
    - not entirely clear how they handle luggage etc

quite recently (2007 November), but yes, the increase in gas would be added

I actually asked around, including a couple of Red busses in CM

they quoted about the same as I said, now maybe a bit more

almost anyone with a truck would do it, for B1000 a day plus gas

Andy - I checked with a couple guys I've used for local moves within Bkk and they both quoted around 7500, Bkk to CM. So yes, I suppose you're right.

Trouble is, these guys are cowboys. About all I've got on them is a mobile number, maybe a copy of their ID. Just a leap of faith, really, sending them off into the sunset with a truckload of my stuff.

I'll do some more calling around tomorrow.

Extras - Thanks for the contact info for AllPack.

    OK, here's some followup.

    Sombat - 089-441-4827
Used him a couple times for moves in Bangkok. 500/600 baht a day for a covered pickup + driver, 200 baht / day for each additional guy. Sombat drives and will also help with some lifting, but if you have a lot of furniture and crap he would prefer you hire an extra guy (or two) as above.

Absolutely no problems with him or his crew. He's been in business with the same # for a couple of years now.

    Suwang - 089-033-4199
I used this guy to get my stuff from Bkk to Chiang Mai. Sombat recommended him b/c he has a newer truck, better for long hauls.

Again no problems. 8100 baht Bkk to Chiang Mai this past week.

Neither of these guys speaks any English, just so you know. In terms of logic and reliability I found them both very easy to deal with.

You can make a copy of their ID and the truck registration if you have any concerns.

Alternitavely you could go fo a Guiness Book Of Records attempt at the world's longest human chain, get people to stand in line from your home in Bangkok to your destination in Chiang Mai and pass the items along from person to person thus cutting all costs of moving and giving others an enormous sense of pride at being in the Guiness Book Of Records. This may sound like an almost impossible task but simply set up a group on facebook and you will have thousands of students banging on your door to to be part of it!
