    Thai agression

    Picture this:

Driving along beach road, Pattaya. Looking for a parking place for my motorbike. Found a space, but some guy is sitting next to it and tells me I cannot park there!!! Seems a bit strange to me, as it is a public street, marked parking places and no signs whatsoever. I ask the guy why and he tells me it belongs to the bar in front of which he is sitting. As I cannot believe bars can own parking places on a public road, I leave my bike and tell him, if this is true he should inform the police.

Next thing I know is he hits me on my head.

    Welcome to Thailand.

^This surprises you? How long have you lived here? Actually, upon further reflection, it is a bit surprising that one guy would attack you; they usually work in packs.

I hope you went straight to the tourist police and laid a complaint.

^And while you're there, you might also lodge a complaint about all of the DVD vendors, motorcycles, noodle stands, clothing vendors, etc, etc, which are blocking public access to public sidewalks.

Two witnesses and you've got a compensation claim. Worth at least 10 grand.

Very odd, he must've hit you from behind or with a bottle or chair, most unlike a Thai to go toe to toe.

Picture this: From the Thai perspective:

He is a Thai bar boy. He has the cognitive ability of a houseplant. He is paid by the bar. His job for the day is to sit outside on his plastic stool and make sure nobody parks in the bar's reserved parking place, just on the off chance his boss might drop by. One of those white, smelly big nose people who can't speak his language parks in the spot he has been instructed to guard. Loss of face, and possible loss of job. He tells him to move. The big nose guy says, "Blah, blah, blah", and starts to walk off. What to do? Hit him, of course. White guy gets off lucky, as the only two other options open were to (A) really beat the crap out of him with a bunch of his pals pitching in or, (B) Let him leave, then totally trash his bike and dump it at the side of the road somewhere. The white guy is of less interest to him than the plastic bags blowing across the street. He has never met one, never spoken to one, and never will. His job is to protect the parking spot. That he understands.

parking a bike is not so difficult, you really need to upset some guy who wants to reserve a space for the bar

    just find another one

Only if he fought back !

Bet his friends were waiting in toe though.

Why would you wanna leave your bike there after he told you it's someone elses spot?

Better the smack round the head than coming back and finding your bike being took for a jet ski ride

Try parking near Anfield (Liverpool's football stadium) without paying the local "minder". If the car is still there when you return the wheels won't be.

Or maybe they'll leave the wheels and take the car. Lot of Irish in Liverpool.

I once parked my car outside Parkhead, Celtic's football ground in Glasgow. One of the local urchins came over said ''hey mister give me a fiver and i will mind your car when your at the game''. ''No thanks son'' i replied I've got my dog in the back''. As i was walking away quite pleased with myself the local Oliver Twist shouted '' hey mister can yer dug blow up tyres''.

    Not always true.

As long as you are prepared to kill them on the spot, then have the connections to deal with the consequences, you will be A ok. Suffice to say, I haven't met many foreigners in Pattaya who are in this position...

Back in the U.K if you had hit him back,it would have gone down as self defence,Or maybe more than likely just finished with a few bruises.

Out here you get the impression your not aloud to stick up for yourself.
In regards to a way of life what keeps us in Thailand when the odds are so stacked against us in many if not all situations !

Everytime I hear wanna of these stories the response in general is the same... Ahh Thats just Thailand for ya " Today alone I see there have been two more farangs found dead and another guy shot and burned to death.I now treat Pattaya news like a fictional drama as my brain wont digest that all this shit is going on around me.

So what is it thats keeps you here ? The women ? cheap way of life ? The weather ?

    (OPEN QUESTION TO ALL )

It does not keep you there, after the gloss has been removed if you are planning to be a long termer you seek a place where you can have night life if you seek it but it is not in your face 24/7. Living In Udon Thani and love it.
