The joys of a Thai bank account (Or why my money stays in Oz)

I was out shopping with Lady Cow today and as she was buying a couple of pairs of new clothes for herself, I thought of scoring a few brownie points by paying for them. Being a bit short of the folding stuff I decided to pay by QR scan. Now one would think a relatively easy operation. Unfortunately as I was confirming the sale by entering my password I accidentally f%$#ed up the last number. No problem I thought I'll just re enter it. Oh contraire. A message comes up "your password is locked after multiple attempts". WTF? I only got it wrong the first time. Being at the shopping centre I go to the Bangkok bank. Apparently it is to prevent scams on foreigners accounts I am told and immediately locks on the first bad entry. The nice lady took me to the ATM and after entering my password which still works the ATM (if not the app) and leaving her to enter all my information I was able to submit a new password. So back up and running. It looks like I will soon be an expert on resubmitting a new password with this first strike and your out.
Anywhere else in the world (other thasn a govt app) I would be asking what idiot came up with this idea, bearing in mind I had already signed into my phone then used my password to sign into the app both times correctly, then unceremoniously dumped out of the banking app after mixing up the confirmation password.

Yea , being locked out after one attempt is really stupid. I can see it being done after three attempts , but one?

Jeez. I use that QR code thing from Bangkok Bank just about every day and keep my cash as long as I can. Guess I haven’t entered the wrong passcode….YET. Will watch out for that. On the other hand, I always have an emergency auxiliary back up card for when things go wrong.

I will eventually get around to open a Kasikorn account as Westpac in oz has sent me an email saying i can only transfer large amounts to Thailand from my Westpac account into a Kasikorn account. It will be handy just in case i have this problem with my current Thai bank again.

What is westpac's definition of a "large amount" ? they are my (main) australian bank , I have n't heard anything from them about this.

I would think a SWIFT transfer would work between any two banks.

The Thai Banks think, "Hmm. Thai's are so smart they could ALL crack it on the second attempt if they were not so honest. But there might be the rare Farang who could crack it on the second attempt too. We better make it One strike and you're out ... just to be safe."
You can use logic to justify anything. That's its power. It’s also its flaw.

    Transfer limits do vary, though.

Which of course means the banks can multiply any flat fees per transaction, because a customer might have to make several transfers.

I'm sure security for customers is the banks first priority, of course.

It used to be the case that banks only traded with specific 'correspondent banks' in other countries, although I think that went out with the ark.

SWIFT is great, unless you are a sanctioned Russian bank. Nowadays I use Wise; the simplest, cheapest and fastest system around, IMHO, unless you are sending to a country where they don't function, which is a small number.

Shu, do you get your bank to label the WISE payments as foreign to meet the visa requirements?
