If you need to change battery maybe try original from manufacturer from official dealership to avoid the pirate copies. Stick with the original parts. Upgrading your car resets the situation but it costs. So you'll need to think a bit what you want to invest in this.

you can add water to sealed battery because they ae not really sealed. take of the label that is on top of the battery under it you will find recessed filling points that you can open with a coin

car manufacturers do not make batteries they buy them from battery manutacturers sometmes from the one that gives the cheapest quote and i know one company that does not worry about quality control just the price they pay for items manufactered by subcontrators , that well known company had to change the supplier 4 times before the item they supplied was up to the standard required (not a battery)

Reading this thread, I am quite surprised. In my experience 3 years battery life are a thing of the ancient past. I expect 5 years now from any no name product and would not be surprised if they last much longer. If you have an engine that does automatic stop start at any stop, you need a battery designed for this, but otherwise no problem.

Sounds like local Thai batteries are not to that standard.

of you have a toyota there is a switch under the aircon controls that turns of that autu stop/start i turn mine of every time i use the highlux, its a stupid and annoying feature that the engine stops every time you pull up for traffic lights

^ I'm surprised they work in hot countries, I thought they would not stop the engine if the air con was running and the interior was above a set temperature. Perhaps it is only the higher end cars that have this feature.

The most annoying thing with the system is when the engine stops while you are stopped to select reverse...grrrrrrrrr

Get a USB charger for the cigarette lighter socket. One with a voltage display. (about150B ) then one can monitor voltage just before starting and see voltage during operation.

Some are made to a basic standard, some are made to a higher standard.

Ford for instance, they sell the Ranger domestic and export.... they bth have the same basic spec battery however export vehicle get a different battery.

Battery in my Ranger died at 9 months old.... Typical ford told me to fuck off when I asked about warranty replacement.

I assume these types of products are just a big cash cow they can slap the brand name on but actually make an inferior product in a shitty Chinese factory. Brakes are in need of replacing so I am not sure where to go with that one. My local B-Quik is offering a good deal on Bentix brakes right now so I might be temped but to be honest my Toyota brakes, which came with the car, have lasted me 92000KM.

Once again thanks for everyone's point of view and knowledge, greatly appreciated. If you are willing to chime in once more with what brand of battery you all have in LOS, that would definitely be a positive for this thread.
i buy panasonic car batteries in Phuket but the 85 ah model not the 70 ah that is sold by toyota but is recommended by the battery shop, have not kept a vehicle long enough to tell you there life span before the power storage starts
to drop off, but over 5 years so far

On a new Honda BRV thee original factory battery lasted 15 months, a replacement battery has been on for 2 years and 2 months.
On the recent 80k service Honda told me my battery needed replacement. I asked how did they know, they told me batteries in Thailand only last 2 to 3 years.
I acknowledged that and when the service was completed I noticed on the invoice that it was noted the battery needed replacement and was tested at 9 volts.
The car was parked up and I immediately thought it’s not going to start, it fired up first time I drove 100kms home and checked on my voltmeter which registered 12.5 volts?
Very glad I didn’t take their advice to change believing the bullchit story on battery life
Over 40 years of driving and I am pretty sure I was getting around 5 to 6 years from a battery.

Got 'The Call' this morning from outside the yoga studio.

Betsy wouldn't start, battery was down to 15%, a new one' being put in.

It was only around 2 years old.

Which seems to be not a terribly short amount of time judging by this thread. But not that good either.

    So... trickle chargers eh....

What's a good model and how much does it cost?

How often to connect it up, and for how long? Once a week/twice a week? 2 hours at a time?

How much longer does it add to the life of a battery? 1 year? 2 years?

Does the cost of the electricity negate the savings from the prolonged lifespan?

Just buying a new battery for a few thousand baht every 2 years does sound easier. And possibly cheaper too, unless it adds 10 years to the battery and costs around 1 baht per hour to the electricity bill.

Have they not developed a little solar power one, where you stick the panel on top of the roof when parked at home and it trickle charges straight to the batto all day?

Why don't you put up a solar array and then you could charge the whole house

Our Fortuner, coming up for 8 years old/52,000km, has had one new battery about 3 years ago. The Honda Accord, 15 years old this month/27,000km, has has two new batteries. From recollection, all replacements were from respective main dealers.

M'Sahib's car, bought new, and as she views it as a present, would never sell it. The last few months she takes it for a 20km trip every Wednesday, checking that everything still works!

I had one years ago back in Oz, it worked quite well to keep the battery charged up when i wasn't using the car for a while. But remember that solar panels need sun, but don't like too much heat...where are you going to put it ? Sit it inside the car on top of the dash here and the heat will cook it. My Hilux was securely parked so I could safely put the panel on the outside without it getting pinched.

My current wheels has been a bit hard to start lately, reluctant to turn over sometimes. My guess was (1) the starter solenoid (2) a failing battery. My thai vocabulary doesn't extend to technical stuff so had to rely on the wife, who has zero mechanical knowledge, to relay that to the mechanic. she did understand battery so asking him to check that was
all she said. No date on the current battery so it was at least 2 years old, I was n't surprised when he checked and it had a low voltage. But after replacing it (2400 baht) I was a bit annoyed when it failed to start after refueling at the PTT 150m down the road...yes, the starter needed replacing too, another 3900 baht.

^ I'd have it outside in the sun, no fear of it being pinched. It coming with a voltometer or whatever it's called that shows you the number of volts the battery has, and how full it is in % would be a good addition.
