    Rove Beetle

I thought I would start a thread to highlight the horrendous burn that this little [at][at][at][at] can inflict upon us.

Below is a picture of my partners arm after she had been burnt by the toxin Pederin which is excreted from the small beetle called the Rover Beetle.

Utterly horrendous and if this shit gets in your eyes it can blind you immediately. If ever found on oneself, use a flick or a blow to remove it from skin before sending this fucker straight to hell.

Thailand expats beware! cut ya lawns and screen those doors and windows! I now understand why countryside people get all tucked in just after sunset!

Evidently, they go back quite a ways - the modern morphed variety have ancestral lineage of some 200 million years old.
With up to 60,000 + varieties identified largely throughout temperate zones, yet the most toxic types are found in the humid tropics.
Not too many natural enemies, as few don't wish to fuck with 'em.

    Interesting thanks for that link.

'Natural Enemies: Scattered evidence needing review suggests that spiders, various insects (including Reduviidae, Carabidae, Asilidae, Formicidae, etc.), amphibians, reptiles, birds, and bats include Staphylinidae among their diets. Among the parasites, fungi play a major role, and hymenopterous parasitoids, nematodes, and Nemata, a relatively minor role. In temperate regions of the world as contrasted with tropical regions, staphylinids may achieve very high population levels at the soil surface; in tropical regions, at least at lower altitudes, ants are ubiquitous and staphylinids less numerous in numbers of individuals; this suggests that ants may limit population levels of staphylinids in tropical regions. Luckily St Patrick rid the emerald Isle of most dangers like snakes, the few unwanted probes were usually practicing district nurses or homisoxualists aka Catholic priests, some acquiesced , some joined in , others became Maoists and impersonated wops with woks.
