    Does anybody miss Tesco?

Now that the supermarket formerly known has Tesco has transmogrified into Lotuthithith is it better, worse or just the same?

Nongbualamphu only has Makro and Lotus's and a couple of small independents, so not too much choice. Things I miss in the new look Lotus's:

    1. "Gordons" gin. No longer offered. Not sold at Makro or the independent liquor stores here. For anything finer than paraffin it is an hour to Udon Thani.

    2. Dog chews. Lotus's still sells a similar product but my dogs really liked the Tesco version and are a bit sniffy about other stuff. A bit like me and cheap gin. I sympathise with them.

    3. Wine. I seldom bought any wine at Tesco and none at Lotus's, it just seems to me that the selection now is smaller and items are often missing. The displays of Thai spirits appear bigger. It feels like they are racing Makro to the bottom rather than trying to distinguish their offerings.

    4. Lotus's don't seem to manage their supply chain as well as Tesco did. Last visit there were no tomatoes, before that no "Ritter" chocolate. Recently they had no milk. Their bread range is not the same and is sometimes an empty shelf.

To be honest, I can't think of anything that Lotus's now offers that looks better than when it was Tesco. Maybe that is just me.

Whoever thought of the logo, colour and stupid 's should be fucking hung up by their balls.

I agree, they had quite a lot of good Tesco's own brand stuff. I liked the raisin and blueberry wheat's cereal which i presume have now gone. My partner liked their red liquorice laces as well.

After finally reading about the acquisition, it appears CP and Central are going for total monopolies.

I personally shop in Top's, Villa Market and Gourmet Market. I always get grossed out by the condition of the frozen and fridge sections in Lotus'S and Big C.

I will go into my local Lotus'S and see whats what.

Link for anyone interested in the history.

Can't say that I have noticed much difference at all but that "Lotus's" causes my eye to twitch every time I see it.

Sadly, not a local option. Of course I can drive the hour to Udon and play dodgems around town and drive back again, I just don't want to.

Probably better for your health to be honest. I always end up buying too much western stuff that ruins my diet.

Sorry to hear that Shutree. I always thought or have thought Big C is just like a Tesco or Lotus.

There isn't that much to choose. In other towns I have lived I have found BigC to be different enough to make it worth visiting both Tesco and BigC.

I always thought Tesco Thailand was shit compared to the real Tesco. Big C Pattaya was far superior.

Anyway, what are we griping about here...

It's not Tescos you are missing here, it's a trip down to Pattaya or Bangkok, or Mike's short time Motel. See Nev for the address

    Nearly. Dry Martinis.

Tonic in Thailand is a whole other question. There is only one brand I have ever seen and I am not convinced that it isn't sweeter than the UK recipe. I drink it because there is no other choice for a G+T.

TBF, Tesco did sell some actual grape wine. In bottles. Something Australian, from memory. The main point here is that whatever the selection was it is much smaller now.

Shirley Porter, Lady Porter (née Cohen; born 29 November 1930) is a British politician who led Westminster City Council in London, representing the Conservative Party. She is the daughter and heiress of Sir Jack Cohen, the founder of Tesco supermarkets. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1991 by John Major after delivering victory in Westminster for the Conservatives in the 1990 elections, but was stripped of this title in 2003.
While leader of Westminster City Council, Porter oversaw the "Building Stable Communities" policy — later described as the "
homes for votes scandal" — and was consequently accused of gerrymandering. The policy was judged illegal by the district auditor, and a surcharge of Ł27m levied on her in 1996.[1] This was later raised to Ł42 million with interest and costs. She eventually settled in 2004, paying a final settlement of Ł12.3 million

They haven't even changed the sign yet where we are.

I use the smaller tesco and big c in the local towns but rarely bother with the bigger shops any longer. They don't sell the range they used to and stuff they do sell is at silly prices. Fresh local veg meat and veg is good enough for me nowadays. I did get myself a decent steak from villa today though.

The fookin' bastards!!!!! My local supermarket is out of canned black eyed peas. It's been tough living......

Big C was as low as I would go, Tesco's wasn't something I'd shop at. Between the mob of people and the "quality" of their goods, it wasn't worth it. My favorite place to shop for a while was Carrefour on Ramkhamhaeng, the grocery was very nice. Then Big C bought it and it was ok for about a year.

Our Tesco was one of their mid sized “talat ” stores , but the shelves had lots of little.....many varieties and bottles of palm oil but few other choices, enough laundry detergent to keep the town clean for months, and shelves full of monk buckets. First thing after CP/Lotus took over was to increase the range but with fewer items of each, next was to install lots more fridges and freezers. But then they filled the fridges with lots of skim milk but no full cream real milk, lots of butter of various brands and sizes ( which nobody is buying), but no margarine any more. One of the new freezers has imported Aussie beef and Kiwi lamb...which nobody is going to buy at their prices. Even I, the only farang in town, am not that desperate to eat beef or lamb, I’m sure none of the locals are either.
Instead of stocking just the occasional packet of spaghetti they brought in lots of pasta types....but stopped stocking any pasta sauce until very recently.
I’ve noticed that they have brought in a fairly large range of plant based “meat” products in the freezers, that doesn’t tempt me either !
So overall I am a bit disappointed with their stock management, I thought CP would be better with their 7/11 experience.

The Lotus's near us was pathetically understocked yesterday, but it was crap when Tesco were involved too.

So overall - I'm pretty neutral.

It doesn't seem to be overstaffed with layabouts anymore.

Talking of supermarkets, I've run out of lavazza...couldn't find any in Villa in Udon yesterday. I bought something they called espresso but the grains are a bit coarse for a moka pot.

Who uses a moka pot and which coffee? Otherwise I'll end up having to grind my own.

I use a Bialetti and have found royal project beans to be excellent.

They're also grown in CM, so 'carbon footprint' and all that.

They are available on 'Lazada' too.

I hand grind them using a hario ceramic burr grinder, as I find it retains more flavour.

After years of sampling beans from around Thailand these are the best according to my tastebuds.

    Can't beat freshly ground coffee.
