Two moka pot questions here for you and Cy. I prefer to grind my own and then put them in my pot, but there are 2 perenial problems with the moka pot.

    1. How do you pour from the pot to the cup without spilling some of the coffee? A friend and I have discussed this and, unless you pour really quickly and get lucky, it seems unavoidable.

    2. If you're using a gas stove, how do you not occasionally melt the handle?

I melted the handle again for the 3rd time in a year recently, and I'm now back to my trusty Vietnamese filter. I always get a cracking cup from this and I'm thinking that my moka pots might well be a thing of the past.

^ I'll have to check in the morning as I can't recall spilling from my 2 cup pots here or at work. May get the occasional spill in the saucer but nothing to speak of.

I use the smallest ring on my gas stove with a metal support trivet so melting handle isn't an issue. I do same on my camping stove. I did burn the handle on a rocket stove though .

Seriously, I don't think I've ever poured from the pot and not lost coffee. Some days are worse than others, but I also find that the higher I go the less I lose.

    I await your report.

Not a drop spilt and no special pouring technique. Not even drips or dribbling from the spout after pouring.

Which Bialetti are you using? I have 2 aluminium 2/3 cup size and a stainless steel one, which I used this morning. They all have the same top and spout, just the base differs. Water is up to the valve level and pot is full.

Are you using one of the bigger pots with a larger spout?

Coffee was BonCafe Mocca, not brilliant, okay if there is nothing else...roll on Monday.

Every time, right at the start, I would always lose some coffee.

Coincidentally, I have one on order. Never had one before and thought it might be a little more environmentally friendly than those Nespresso-compatible capsules.

After ordering I looked at my gas stove and decided that I cannot use it as is. So I am looking now for a small electric plate.

^ Out of curiosity, I did some experiments, using water rather than coffee. If you tilt the pot very slowly towards the cup then yes it spills to start with. I am obviously more desperate for my morning coffee than you. Either that or the many years of practice has provided me the correct tilting speed for zero spillage.

Yes, the range and quantity of detergents on display is astonishing.

Lotus's made no layout changes at all to our store and I didn't notice any new product lines, just more of the same old items added to cover the shelf space.

I did think of one tiny improvement. Tesco used to sell black sesame seeds and basil seeds close together in packaging that only marked them as 'grain'. You had to check the bar codes to be sure you were buying the right one. Lotus's have made the giant leap to actually labelling them, in English.

    That's it, the speed.

Given the spillage and melted handles, I'm now gonna stick with my old Vietnamese favourite, I fink.

I had similar problems when I moved house, so I (stupidly) tried balancing it, which ended in disaster.

This is it makes up to a liter, very solid heavy and keep sit hot so no need to decant into Thermos etc

I hand grind them using a hario ceramic burr grinder, as I find it retains more flavour.

After years of sampling beans from around Thailand these are the best according to my tastebuds.

    Can't beat freshly ground coffee.
I managed to find a ceramic burr grinder in Udon and tried out the Royal Project coffee beans. Pretty good coffee this morning. The grinder is excellent for getting a fine grain. I can get used to the beans...

    Thanks for the info.

I have to agree, I did not notice any real change other than the sign.
But I never shopped there often anyway.

I looked further into the tonic question. As suspected, the Thai version is packed with sugar, 9%:

The UK version has no sugar but it is sweetened with Aspartame.

    Does anybody miss Tesco?-tonicuk-jpg

Aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than sugar and the amount in the bottle isn't mentioned.
End result: I still don't know if one version is sweeter than the other.

My Bialetti arrived and I ordered a small electric hotplate because I cannot seem to find anything to reduce the size of my gas rings. All good, then I discovered that either due to her misunderstanding or my failure to be clear the gf had not actually ordered the beans. There is a woman in town who sells coffee from Moka pots, she tells me her brother in Rayong sends her the beans and she roasts them herself. In a wok probably, she makes a very strong black coffee. She agreed to sell me some beans and I made a few cups of coffee, best described as a bit strong.
Then, yesterday, the Royal Project beans arrived after the staff had been reminded of the urgency of the situation and got onto it with Lazada. So today I'll be giving it a first go.
How fine do you grind the beans? I am adjusting the grind but I don't have any baseline to compare things with so it is trial and error.
Meanwhile, thanks for the tip on the beans. They small great out of the packet.

    Too right I do!

Maybe I can steel myself to drive into Udon Thani this weekend. I really do not enjoy driving there, even by Thai standards I think the Udon traffic is tricky.

The first couple of brews with my new pot I had zero spillage. No problem here, I thought. The last couple have both seen minor spills. I don't think I am doing anything differently.

The hotplate has been sent outside. As the enclosed instructions advised, there was some burning smell off the hotplate the first few times I used it. It is wearing off quickly.
